I don't understand what specifically you are so angry about. GSC is our resident curmudgeon. Nothing Bush does is ever good enough, or conservative enough, or quick enough, to appease the unappeasable GSC.
Personally, I think he's still smarting over the defeat of his hero, Bob Smith, in New Hampshire.

I guess that if I would define everything that is timed for optimum public attention, and mostly likely to achieve long lasting success 'political expediency,' I might agree with you too.
But since I don't accept your broad definition of the term, and don't share your cynicism about the President, I still come down on the other side of the argument you're trying to make.
I still believe, as YOU once did, that he is a man of honor and moral clarity. I have seen nothing in 3 years, disagreements notwithstanding, to make me lose the confidence I have in him. I'm sorry you have.

In order to amend a post you must get permission from 3/4s of the posters. :^) I doubt they'll ratify it, so it looks like I must get used to being considered a jackass. ;^)
I also do not want to amend the Constitution for trivial reasons but what do you do when the courts ignore the basic meanings of a word such as marriage?
This issue is just now becoming dramatic, and hasn't even had a chance to play out yet. The federal courts and Congress have not yet weighed in on this.
Hysteria over gay marriage is just not enough to warrant this sort of tampering, and I have yet to see any argument for a marriage amendment that makes a case convincing enough to justify changing the Constitution. The battle to preserve marriage is far from over, and far from lost.
If it comes to pass that we truly must amend the Constitution to protect marriage, then I am hopeful we'll have the presence of mind to fix the underlying problem, rather than just one symptom.

If gay people didn't exist, neither would style. Get a grip!
I don't care about gay designers on television, as long as they aren't proselytizing but are merely telling me how to do a paint technique.
For goodness sake! Calm down and read what you are typing!

are you a moron? Wow! That was a well thought out, and witty, defense of your position. I am impressed.
Hmm Am I moron? Guess I am, considering I am talking to you.
Have a nice day. ;-)

Very apt observations. And I agree that this probably reflects more of a political move on Bush's part than a belief on his part that the Constitution actually needs to be amended this way.
Knowing how shrewd Bush is (I consider him a modern Lincoln), I am confident that he and his advisors have done the political math, and concluded that this works in his favor.
Sadly, I doubt that what is constitutionally right probably doesn't carry much weight in those calculations, but that's politics.

Beware, beware, beware of a constitutional amendment. We don't want one. President Bush should have done his homework.......or he's being naive or ill-advised.
The liberals and leftists will try to take over and control the amendment process and it can be a total disaster for us. Remember, they can file to amend the constitution with a variety of leftist amendments just as well as our side can file with just one, and at the same time, also. All kinds of mischief can take place. We can't take this chance.
Gay marriage MUST be handled at the state legislature level!

This President plays poker all time. Even many Republicans don't yet seem to realize this. He almost always waits until things are just right before he jumps in. When he does, he gets maximum effect. Is that politics? Yes, but it is based on firm convictions that he has long held.Exactly!
The cynics here think that one cannot be politically wise, and have convictions at the same time.
The problem with that, is that, if it were true, we would never have an honorable man or woman succeed in politics......ever.
And they just don't GET the fact that the President has maintained both political deftness and moral clarity at the same time.

"Don't pay attention to illegal immigration. Don't pay attention to all of our jobs going overseas. Look over here! Ain't I wonderful over here? Don't look over there." If Bush would only CLOSE our borders and put tariffs on American companies using foreign slave workers but selling their slave goods here in America, I would say he was as great as Reagan.
But he won't and he ain't.

Surprised there is no thread or discussion on Kerry's or Edwards' reactions to the president's speech?
is Kerry expected to win the small states today (Utah, Idaho, Hawaii???)

Just when you wonder if he's still capable of true leadership any longer, Bush does the courageous, right thing.
Right on!

I'm curious, how can you stand that place? The few times I've tried to go there, I literally get sick to my stomach. No joke; I honestly feel like I will vomit. Yea, I dont do it often, but I see it as my civic duty.

I support Bush on what marriage should be defined as being, however, I do not know if a federal level amend. is the right way to go.

It's a sensible proposal to have the people who want gay marriage to amend the constitution. And you respond with a wise-ass remark (something about N Korean nukes). The marriage licenses they're holding in SF may as well be written in invisible ink /c they're completely invalid.
