Were there any light moments in this interview? It came off as incredibly heavy and dark to me.

If you're referring to the Bush/Russert interview, yes!

Russert asked Bush whether he, Bush, could "accept" a fundamentalist Islamic authoritarian state emerging in Iraq. Bush answered that that was not going to happen, and to illustrate it talked about a conversation he had with a free Iraqi leader, a man who'd lost dozens to relatives to Saddam Hussein. The Iraqi leader said that he was committed to a government of full religious tolerance -- and, Bush added, "he's a Shia fella."

My spouse and I almost fell off the sofa laughing!

Not out of disrespect, mind you.

It was just a Texas Moment, kind of like the one where he said "International lawwwwww? I'll have to call my lawyer..."

It was an attack interview, but that's good for the President. His answers were measured and he was calm and rational under fire. That's what was needed at this time. I give him a higher grade, an A-. Bring on Dan Rather!

Thanks for articulating my feelings.... Russert didn't say one positive thing. Not ONE. I thought his interview was terrible, almost disrespectful, and the President did a great job with his sincere answers.

Gracey -- you are 100% correct and I would add that I think his questioning was disrespectful of the President and phrased in a way to get out the DemocRAT Talking Point papers for Kerry. If people cannot see that, it is because they don't want to see it.

IMHO, the President did a terrific job of getting his message across to the American people. I don't want some slick talker as President -- I want a President that loves this Country dearly and wants what is best for all Americans and doesn't govern by sticking his finger in the wind to see which way it is blowing.

When Russert brought up the new tone and used Daschle, it was just one more RAT Talking Point Paper and Pres Bush hit it out of the park. Didn't take a genius to figure out where the blame lies -- right at the feet of the Clinton DemocRAT Party.

Believe that President Bush did an outstanding job in the face of an obvious hostile interviewer that if I closed my eyes would see he was reading from the Clinton Talking Point papers for his interview. I love the fact President Bush is a plain spoken man who speaks from the heart -- if people cannot see that, then they are not opening their eyes and I guess prefer a slick talkmaster that spins and lies instead of telling the truth.

My thoughts on this interview are that I would say Boo, Hiss to Russert for his lack of respect for the President and BRAVO to Pres Bush for being able to stand up to this attack questioning. President Bush once again has made me very glad to have supported him for office since 1994 when he ousted Ma Richards as our Governor and made the liberals angry -- that same anger that you see today from the DemocRATs and their friends in the media started in 1994.

Today I live by one slogan for this Presidential campaign when it comes to Pres Bush's campaign -- LOSING IS NOT OPTION!

Audey Murphy was a very short war hero and a successful movie cowboy actor. Short doesn't imply weak and neither does tall imply strong. It's what a man stand for that's important. (same for baldness vs hair)

I, too, was pleased when President Bush brought out his comment about how Bush is almost as disliked as Reagan over in Europe.

That put a big smile on my face too. Wasn't that a cool come back??? Shows his class. Well, I wanted to answer for President Bush and say "Well, what do you expect from Socialist Nations, with Leftist press??

I did...I kept saying it, "answer it this way!" I really wish he would stand up for himself to these clowns. Love him or hate him I thought Russert did ask pretty tough questions and did not deviate from his weekly self.

What's hysterical is the demokRATS now want to associate our President with Ronald Reagen and act as though that is a bad thing!

Hope you enjoyed that interview -- I think the President did fine. I liked the way he wouldn't allow Russert to control the flow and interrupt his answers. Tim (and Chris and all the other fellow-travelers) want to clip those soundbites into the simplistic responses that their questions are meant to setup.

I hope your husband comes to celebrate in your nuttiness! ;)

... Kay testify before the Senate and he said to Kennedy: "As you know, Senator, before the war I sat in your office and reviewed the intelligence and we agreed Iraq had WMDs".
Slam. Thanks for reporting this.

He's doing a pretty good job so far (halfway into the interview here), and he has not called those Republicans who disagree with his policies trolls or troublemakers, either.

He doesn't call his overt adversaries like Kerry et al names either.

Not that both camps don't deserve some name calling, IMO. All depends on presentation and the basis for the criticism.

This height issue could play a major factor in the election

Maybe you can take solace in the fact that Laura Bush won the best cookie recipe contest which historically follows the winner of the Presidential race.

Mrs. Bush beat Tipper Gore hands down.

I firmly believe Mrs. Bush will lead us to victory over Theres Heinz. Ketchup cookies never play well in my household.

"This height issue could play a major factor in the election."

Are you saying that tongue-in-cheek?

Surely votes wouldn't be that shallow in how they picked the next president. Oh wait Clinton was elected twice...never mind.

He did win the popular vote. But the difference in height between Bush and Kerry will be more apparent. That's exactly what I am afraid of when Bush stands side by side to Kerry in the debates. This height issue could play a major factor in the election.

The "he won the popular vote" comment has always seemed so strange to me. One, it does not matter. And because it's common knowledge that people react to the media reports as voting happens around the country. In many states Bush was the clear winner many people did not vote once they knew the outcome. So, the 500k "popular vote" difference is really meaningless because it's, well, meaningless.

So, Kerry will look like Lurch next to Bush? That won't hurt. He will also look like one ugly man next to Bush.

This point cannot be made strongly enough.

Please spread it around to your friends or any ping list that you may have. It may help to buoy wavering spirits.

I would even pay to see a Dan Rather interview -- he has been an attack dog on Pres Bush since he ousted Rather's favorite female in Ma Richards. He chastised us on the air that election night in 1994 asking how the Great State of Texas could defeat such a wonderful woman -- it was a Gag Alert moment. That began my boycott of Dan Rather that has continued until today, but I would lift the boycott to see Rather face Pres Bush in an interview.

You're bringing tears to my eyes. Yes, we want a president who CARES about US the citizens of this country... Not his personal popularity. I think we on FR should all take the time to write the White House and let our President know how much we appreciated his answers and his CONCERN for US... the citizens of this country. Thanks PKM... I'm stilll teared up over your remarks.
