Just heard on WCBS newsradio NY that CNN reports Carlie Brucia found dead in Sarasota.

I believe it is in the Book of John where Jesus says something to the effect of ~~ "Whosoever destroys the innocence of a child should tie a milstone about his neck and throw himself into the lake". That does not signify forgiveness of killers/rapists of children to me. At least not by we mere humans.

I don't have any unique perspective to offer on this one, or what ought to be done to the perpetrator, but I do think that we, as a society, need to get our priorities straight when it comes to prosecuting crime. We need to focus on murder, sexual assault, and property crimes, and pay less attention to such areas as susbstance abuse.

I disagree as drug abuse in the fashion of most abusers leads to deviant/criminal behavior. Given a slap on the wrist like this case made an opportunity for this piece of excrement to strike down an innocent girl.

My youngest is a 14 year old male football player who would likely make mincemeat of any attacker, but it never hurts to pass along useful information. He may need to tell his children these things some day.

I've changed my mind about the judge, now that I've heard the facts behind the hearing.... it's clear the judge acted reasonably under the fact situation and documentation he had.

In fact, he would have acted unreasonably to have revoked parole on the basis of the failed drug test. That failure was technical in nature only. Smith took prescribed medication that caused the positive result.

THe failure to pay fines and costs, I suppose the judge had more discretion. But there were mitigation circumstances that the judge is bound to consider. Unless he had some reason to single out Joseph Smith, or Smith had violated parole in some other way, it would have been VERY unusual to throw Smith back in jail.

I don't think drug abuse per se has anything to do with the kind of deviant behavior we're seeing here, if you discount the rare occasions when extreme usage might lead to psychosis. I can see where the association might be made, but I don't think it's a good one. This individual is most likely a sociopathic "recreational" killer, who would do what he does regardless of whatever influence drugs might have had on his behavior in the past. You might argue that going out of the way to prosecute such a person for drug use would prevent such a thing from happening, but that would be true only if the penalty for drug use were life imprisonment.

The evidence was clear how can a man try to save her from running out into traffic if she is walking on the sidewalk minding her own business, many witnesses see him attacking her, he said "shut up or I will cut you" and tried to drag her over a railing into the bushes. That isn't "freaking out because he had tattoos". How dense was the jury? The evidence was clear and the jury chose to ignore it. The blood is on their hands. Many juries WANT to do something "shocking" and ignore the evidence just like O.J. jury. I don't know how many years he would've gotten even if convicted but they should give life without parole for attempted kidnapping.

When are parents going to realize we live in a different time .. it's just not safe to leave out children outside by themselves. I pray for the parents.

I remember when I was this child's age .. I could spend all day Saturday in my neighborhood playing and my parents did not have to be concerned where I was or if I was safe.

The neighbors might be cocaine addicts themselves and so didn't think his being in prison for multiple drug offenses was any big deal. Once someone kidnaps, they should never be freed.

The neighbors might be as well as his roomate/business partner. For someone like this excrement to keep living in a place like Sarasota, he has to have like-minded friends which I'm sure there are alot living in Sarasota/Bradenton as there are alot of drug related addicts in this area.

She, on the other hand, was an enebriated slut whose testimony was based on misunderstanding his good intentions.

He's probably a very good liar and a master manipulator.

The problem I have with most of these judges is that they just look at "recent" history. If he had taken Smith's entire criminal career into context, he could have shipped him off to Ocala for rehab or worse if need be. The reccomendations of the probation officer who dealt with this scum were ignored.

It seems appropriate in cases like this that a torture warrant is a needed tool for law enforcement. When there is a life-threatening situation such as an abduction or potential terrorist activity, and the suspect will not cooperate, then torture should be used in order to get that information. It cannot be used in order to gain an admission of guilt, only to get information about potential life saving information.
