The accusation was that Kerry said Bush was a deserter. If Bush doesn't repudiate everything people are going to say about Kerry, does Bush have to take credit for them?

BTW, do you have the link to the Drudge article?

I am NO fan of Kerry and wouldn't vote for him if he were the ONLY candidate. However, knowing a bit about riverboats on the delta, and having read excerpts of his record I can only come to the conclusion that his service was exemplary. Being wounded THREE TIMES, boo-boos or NOT, is a ticket home. This is a SPECIOUS argument and one that will only backfire if used by the GOP. And might I add 'rightfully' so.

This answers something I've been wondering about:

"Kerry initially hoped to continue his service at a relatively safe distance from most fighting, securing an assignment as "swift boat" skipper. While the 50-foot swift boats cruised the Vietnamese coast a little closer to the action than the Gridley had come, they were still considered relatively safe.

"I didn't really want to get involved in the war," Kerry said in a little-noticed contribution to a book of Vietnam reminiscences published in 1986. "When I signed up for the swift boats, they had very little to do with the war. They were engaged in coastal patrolling and that's what I thought I was going to be doing."

But two weeks after he arrived in Vietnam, the swift boat mission changed -- and Kerry went from having one of the safest assignments in the escalating conflict to one of the most dangerous. Under the newly launched Operation SEALORD, swift boats were charged with patrolling the narrow waterways of the Mekong Delta to draw fire and smoke out the enemy. Cruising inlets and coves and canals, swift boats were especially vulnerable targets."

Got source?

FWIW here is a FR post from NewsMax. Kerry certainly is trying to put the charge to rest. Kerry Plays Dumb on Truth About Bush's Guard Service

I still think calling Kerry a deserter is silly.

Neither Bush nor Kerry were deserters.

"Deserter" is a term that should be reserved for those who are eligable to penalty by death by a military court. Neither man has even been charged.

Using this term on Bush or Kerry waters down the offense

Although Kerry's wounds had been nothing more than band-aid "boo boos", and he was perfectly fit to serve.

EXACTLY what were his Wounds and what caused them?? band-aid boo-boos doesn't sound like what you would get Purple Hearts for.

To add to the silliness of your arguement. In trying to find info on Bush's honorable discharge, it turns out he was granted his discharge (honorable) 6 months early! Jeez, he didn't have to leave, but he did!! So I guess, using your logic, you think Bush is a deserter.

Bush DID his duty, and got an Honorable Discharge and what's more, he's been HONORABLE since...unlike F ingKerry who HURT his fellow Vets by what he did after he got out!

That's not going to wash. Kerry's service in Vietnam was heroic and honorable. His behaviour after the war is another story and that's how the GOP should go after him. If anybody goes after his active duty service that's going to bite them in the ass.

We weren't discussing what Kerry did after he got out. We were discussing whether he was a deserter or not. He most certainly was not.

Let's calm down now. Go over to the thread "About Kerry's Purple Hearts And Reassignment" and read the details. Have you seen the movie Platoon? IIRC, the soldiers mention the three-wounds-and-out rule; it was well-known, and not an obscure loophole that only Kerry took advantage of.

I despise Kerry for the testimony he gave before Congress, accusing his fellow soldiers of war crimes when many of them were still being tortured in POW camps; for the many obstructionist votes regarding defense and intelligence he has cast in the Senate; for his duplicitous handling of the issues surrounding the current war; and for his smug arrogance and continual reminders of his veteran's status. However, unless you saw more combat, were wounded more times, and still chose to stay incountry, let's not get carried away and start accusing him of desertion. We on the Right are above such base tactics, even though the lefties hurl them at us daily.

A deserter and much more-

Referring to the POW/MIA families and activists, who were demanding an honest accounting "Kerry labeled them "professional malcontents, conspiracy mongers, con artists, and dime-store Rambos" who were only involved in the POW/MIA issue for money. "

Who's really the professonal malcontent conspiracy monger con man----KERRY!
