As Carolinians, we have a special responsibility to inform the rest of the nation of our collective disdain for Edwards, a disdain that Carolina Republicans AND Democrats feel for this self-serving charlatan - (not Charlottean :^).

Well said! It is absolutely true that there's no love lost between Edwards and NC Democrats, and obviously no NC Republican holds him in high esteem. He came out of nowhere, with a self-financed campaign, and took the Dem Senate nomination away from party stalwarts who had "paid their dues," unlike Edwards. He won a flukish election in 1998 over Lauch Faircloth, who ran the worst campaign I've ever seen (and the fact that Faircloth was/is nearly deaf didn't help in debates and appearances before large crowds).

After President Bush's election in 2000, Edwards realized that his re-election chances were slim, given that he'd have to run in a Presidential election year with Dubya at the top of the ticket. So, he decided to roll the dice on a long shot bid for the Top Job. If headed for defeat in the Senate, why not? Even a failure would probably lead to something good for Edwards -- the VP nomination; or a Cabinet position in a (God forbid) Democrat administration; or a position as a DC lobbyist; or maybe General Counsel for the DNC. At absolute worst, his hourly rate as a personal injury attorney would skyrocket.

Edwards reminds me of a junior executive at a big corporation who, getting wind of his impending firing, applies for the position of CEO. Nothing to lose, so, again, why not?

I believe there's a lot of truth in that. In essential ways they are the "same" candidate. There is room for one or the other. Of the two, I would rather face Clark, however. He's got more stuff in the way of "I-can't-believe-he-said-that!" than Frenchie does. The anti-Clark television ads would be much more entertaining.

Gephardt and the trade unions are so last century. They have been an anchor on manufacturing instead of a participant in progress.

Gephardt's support of an international minimum wage had me in stiches. I agree, I think a sandal maker in Bangladesh should earn the same as a Walmart cashier in Denver.

Dean has perhaps one week left in his campaign. If he doesn't win NH, he is done. Pity. I was hoping he could stay the course, but he's done his work. Dean's presence has pushed the other candidates further to the left and they'll find it harder to work their way back to the center. Kerry is on the record now for voting against the bill to support the troops. I don't know that he would've done that if he didn't have to catch Dean. So it's not a total loss.
