RICHMOND - Civil War heritage groups are criticizing Gov. Mark Warner for refusing to officially recognize their commemorative events since taking office two years ago.
As Virginians celebrate Lee-Jackson Day today with Mr. Warner's blessing, the groups are urging the Democratic governor to issue a proclamation for a Civil War History Month, a Confederate History Month or a Union Soldier Month.

Oh, you so have to love the agents of "tolerance and diversity." When George Allen issued Confederate History Month proclamations, he received death threats, and had to have his appearance at a school canceled once because of a bomb threat.
If we don't stand up to these people, they'll slowly succeed in eliminating any mention of the Confederacy in anything but the most negative, slanted, and untrue ways.

This is just sad. We should honor the sacrifices made on both sides. Instead of suppressing our history, we should study it and keep it alive. The Civil War explains much of who we are today.

The practice of issuing gubernatorial decrees about the Civil War or the Confederacy dates back at least to former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder's term.
In 1990, Mr. Wilder, a Democrat, proclaimed April 7 to 15 the "Final Chapter of the Civil War Days," recalling "those who sacrificed in this great struggle." His document praised Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, but it also lauded President Lincoln and Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant.
Also, Mr. Wilder, the nation's first black governor, did not remove portraits of Lee and Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson from his office while he was governor from 1990 to 1994.
Regardless of what you think of Wilder, he did the honorable thing and knew he was the Governor of a variety of Virginians with different backgrounds. I will still remember Wilder fondly for behaving honorably and leaving those portraits up during his term. If everyone behaved in such a manner in these arguments then the problem would have long since faded.

the ONLY ELECTED black governor of VA, Douglas Wilder, ALWAYS stands for the dixie battleflag, when it passes in parades & sings Dixie as loud as anyone (AND as BADLY as i do! LOL!) in the southland.
if he can figure out the TRUTH, why can't SCALAWAG WARNER????

I think a lot more of Wilder now than I did when I lived in Virginia during his term. He always came off as arrogant and aloof, and was gone from the state so much that a radio station (I think in Norfolk) printed up milk cartons with his picture on them and the caption "HAVE YOU SEEN THIS GOVERNOR?"
He is a Democrat, and liberal, but he's intellectually honest and someone that debates on ideas, not ad hominems and sound bites. That's rare these days, and deserves respect. And he does have a good sense of Virginia's 400-year history.
Unfortunately, the more common Democratic black "leader" in Virginia is somebody like that Richmond city councilman several years ago, who instigated and celebrated the burning of the R. E. Lee mural on the Shockoe Bottom floodwall.
