WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former President Clinton praised the capture of Saddam Hussein and said the ousted Iraqi president finally will answer "for decades of tyranny and murder." "I am glad he was captured alive so he can be brought before the bar of justice," Clinton said Sunday in a statement.
Clinton saluted U.S. troops, who found the bearded and disheveled former dictator in an underground hide-out on a farm near his hometown, Tikrit. Clinton also congratulated his successor in the White House.
"Saddam Hussein's capture is a tribute to the skill and bravery of our troops and the good work of our intelligence officers," Clinton said. "I know President Bush is very proud of our troops today. I congratulate him and them."
Clinton, who ordered bombing and missile strikes against Iraqi targets in the 1990s, said he hoped the seizure would help bring more stability to the country.
"I hope his capture will speed Iraq's transformation to a secure and self-governing nation and increase international support for and involvement in meeting the big challenges ahead," he said.

Very shrewd observation. Would have missed it.
There's never sincere or gracious about Clinton.

If Clinton were President during this historic event, he would have been before the cameras as the operation was just beginning. Clinton would never allow Blair or officers under his command steal his thunder. On the other hand, Bush waited all the players had their rightful time on the world stage.

I hope Saddam swears that he and Billy Boy were pen pals and that he had talks with Billy about terrorist strikes against the US. Maybe - just maybe Billy could spend some time in Jail.

The same bar, incidentally, that he was judged to no longer be worthy to argue in front of.

Mr. Clinton... why do not you spend your retirement watching professional golf... you were good at it during your presidency.
I'm sure you are an expert at it now.

Let's face it...
As great as the cature of Saddam Hussein is, the Impeachment and ouster of Bill Clinton (D) as President would have been much sweeter.

I agree too. But the praise is designed to blunt Dean's campaign and Gore's endorsement of Dean. Clinton isn't happy about this capture AT ALL!You are exactly right. This statement is all about making Dean look bad. Dean, however, did a non-committal congratulatory statement as well. So, we are at a wash right here as to who is going to claim the so-called moderates in the Rat party.
To: HAL9000
The statement says nothing about Bubba or Mrs Bubba one way or another. It is so boilerplate, so pedestrian, so devoid of any insight a homeless bum on Market Street in San Francisco could've made it. The news item itself speaks more about the media's fascination with and their adulation of their Golden Boy! Why did they ask him? Why did they quote such a boring statment from their Genius so uncritically? Why not ask Gerald Ford what he thinks, or Bush Sr? Or Jimmy Buffett, for that matter?!

James Carville said Saddam was being slammed about sex. All the mass murders was his private life and should not have anything to do with his presidency. This is a partisan witch hunt by a buch of religious ,rightwing zealots. Hillary says it's a VRWC. Saddam gave up just to make Bush look good before the election. Uday and Qusay are secretly in hiding with Bush daughters, Jen and Barb.

Let me help those who are not clear on the Rat response to events in Iraq:
a good thing happens = Now is a good time to bring in (useless) International support.
a bad thing happens = Now is a good time to bring in (useless) International support.
nothing happens = Now is a good time to bring in (useless) International support.
a neutral thing happens = Now is a good time to bring in (useless) International support.

First time Clinton has behaved like a former President should! I will give credit where credit is due. Let's hope tomorrow he doesn't mess it all up by saying something treasonous!
