Conservatives are now the "Blacks" of the Republican Party

In a discussion on this thread Tom Ridge's Immigration Remarks Draw Fire a post regarding the conservative angst about the recent campaign finance reform that Bush signed into law and that the Supreme Court approved (and the approval was praised by the White House), on the heals of the Medicare entitlement enacted under a Republican controlled government the following was posted:

I'm hearing Rush now. He claims the republicans have ONLY one party to go to. He has put this issue squarely on the problem. We need to vote outside of this corrupt party apparatus.

I also heard this on Rush and my blood boiled. Rush said conservatives have no place else to go and thus will continue to vote as a block to the Republicans.....and then it hit me. That is exactly what we conservatives lament about Blacks and the Democratic party. Black Democrats who vote straight Democratic and are rewarded by being ignored.

In other words, Conservatives are now the "Blacks" of the Republican Party!!!

I urge the same solution to Republican conservatives that Black conservatives offer to Black Democrats. QUIT! Become independents and let the parties fight for our votes. If we can't take the GOP back we should leave the GOP.

I did not change. My party did. I thank God Ronald Reagan is unable to comprehend what is happening to the party he saved.

Great idea.

I'm thinking about resigning my Precinct Chair post, to let our local party at least know how I feel about campaign finance reform, medical socialism, and Bush's promise to sign any renewal of the assault weapons ban.

I don't care that the ban won't be renewed: the point is, Bush has said HE would renew it.

I felt betrrayed then, and I feel that way still.

Overall, that doesn't seem to work.

Perhaps we need to tie our donations to progress on specific action items. Even telling the RNC that if action isn't made on at least some of the items, our donations will be going to build an alternate conservative party like the Constitution Party.

thank you - it seemed apt.
I note in passing that the venomous self-styled omniscients here have thus far not deigned to touch it.

I am married and have three kids also, but that has not changed me. Guess I like to do things the hard way.

There are a lot of posters here that are pretty upset that, under a Republican president and congress, the country is not only lurching to the left, but seemingly abandoning its constitution.

These folks first allegiance, IMO, is to the Constitution and Bill of Rights. If that's not conservative, I'd like to know what is.

Since you decided to call them traitors and cowards, it's about time you let everyone know what you think "conservative" means.

Yeah, Bush is a better bet than the socialist dems, who might be instant disaster, but it's hard not to feel disillusioned sometimes, especially after yesterday.

Was Reagan a traitor acc. to those here on this thread who have so glibly accused their fellow FReepers of so being for harboring an identical disaffection?

Reagan also had the 11th commandment.

Kind of a paradox there.

An EXCELLENT post, IMHO.

Pinging people who might find this of interest.

An EXCELLENT challenge to the ideological purists.

Reagan is not God.
Thus, no paradox.

af_vet_1981 doesn't seem to adhere to that, considering the way he has responded to me and I am currently a Republican (may not be for much longer).

Conservatives constantly differentiate between conservatives and republicans — a base of convenience, IMO. In '92, Conservatives told the GOP "screw you" and stayed home or voted for Perot, etc. Now the GOP is looking to the center for votes and conservatives wonder why.
Actually, the conservative Republicans came back strong two years later in 1994, and conservatives responded by electing them to majorities in both houses of congress.

Then, in 1998, the Republicans started wimping out on the conservative agenda and conservatives stayed home, giving the Dems some gains in the House and Senate.

The truth is, when Republicans run as conservatives, and when they stand up for conservative values and principles, they win.

The problem with Bush as president, and the current Republican "leadership" in both houses of congress is that they seem to forget this. They are headed for a big upset if they don't start standing up for their alleged conservative principles and values.

Perhaps we Conservatives need to draft our own "Contract with Republican Leaders" and make it perfectly clear what our expectations are and also make it clear that compromising on core values will lead to electoral defeat for these psuedo-conservative, "party over principle" Republicans.

Reagan is not God.
Thus, no paradox

But Reagan is considered a God by some here on FR. I thank God he was elected in 80, but even Reagan himself would not consider himself a political God(mostly the "there is not a dimes worth of difference" crowd on FR are the ones who consider Reagan a God).

But then they are the first ones to break his 11th commandment.

Yeah I have to admit that marriage has tamed me to some extent, no doubt because I married a woman that was just as much a hard arse as I was. Even though I will still vote Bush (unless coulter/limbaugh/drudge/hannity run) I admit compromise sucks!

My parents could not tame me, there is no way anyone else could. My wife realized that before we got married and doesn't try.

One of the worst things to ever pass his lips. It was ridiculous.

Reagan had principle, he never refuted his 11th commandment.

He should have. It's more principled to admit you made a mistake.

In anycase, most of us who were adults back at that time knew he didn't mean it literally in every case.
