Malvo also uses noticably different writing styles, often on the same drawing.
I have to wonder if their financial source could also give them more than just money to slip into the states.
Is there any known connection to these two and a guy named Nizar Trablisi?
Trablisi was involved in a diamond heist for al Qaeda which provided them with a lot of cash. Trablisi also came out with the assertion that al Qaeda trained 3-man sniper teams. Trablisi was caught in Europe trying to plot attacks on the US embassy in Paris and the Feds apparently talked with him during the sniper investigation.
Didn't J A Muhammad say he was going to the Caymans on a trip to do with purchasing land?
He was in command of a reserve security unit at Andrews at the time of the sniper shootings. I believe he had been in that position for some time. (He was later activated, and as far as I know still has that reserve position.)
Yes, Andrews is the same base Elian was at. (I know the base because I used to pull reserve duty there.)
Are the snipers Part of the "Five Percent Nation?"
This group has a code made up of numbers which signify certain phrases- presumably passages in their pamphlets they hand out in urban areas. There is also a similar code using letters.
The group calls themselves Muslim but their ideology bears little if any comparison.
Note that Muhammad was known to pass out pamphlets when he hung out at the homeless shelter.
Note also Malvo's sketch notes, featuring apparently irrelevent numbers, as well as his text notes which feature occasional letters which are darkened by extra scribbling.
If someone has copies of said pamphlets, it may be possible to match phrases in them to some of his rambling code. Or, he may be making his own code based on the same idea.

Until his arrest, Osman participated in monthly drills at the Tacoma drill center as a member of Supply Support Battalion One, Company F, a fueling unit. “According to his supervisors, he was just like all our new affiliates – eager to learn the job and get qualified in his position,” said Cmdr. John Croce, a spokesman for Navy Supply Support Battalion One. As a new Reserve member, Osman spent the bulk of his weekend duty training in Tacoma, though he also attended one field training exercise at Fort Lewis, Wash., Croce said. “He didn’t actually have access to fuel,” Croce said. “It was an exercise in setting up equipment like a field fuel depot.” But even that kind of observation could have been valuable to a terrorist organization, said Larry C. Johnson, a former deputy director in the State Department’s Office of Counterterrorism. A terrorist sympathizer holding a relatively benign job in the Navy could gather plenty of intelligence useful for a terrorist attack, he said. The successful October 2000 terrorist attack on the destroyer Cole, in the port of Aden, Yemen, probably was accomplished with information about fueling times and procedures, Johnson said. Getting a terrorist or sympathizer into the U.S. military is “an intelligence bonanza,” he said. “They’ll know what type of fuel is being used, what the procedures are.” Such an individual also would have access to official identification and uniforms, Johnson said. “If the guy has any type of ties whatsoever, it’s very serious.
