WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Today Dr. William F. Schulz, executive director of Amnesty International USA, released the following statement regarding the jury's recommendation of death in the case of John Allen Muhammad:

"Amnesty International extends its deepest sympathies to all of the victims and their families who have been impacted by the tragic shootings, which plagued the DC area last year. The jury's decision to recommend a death sentence for John Allen Muhammad, however, serves to further perpetuate an endless cycle of violence.

"It is also disappointing that this sentence is being handed down at a time when the rest of the world is increasingly moving toward the abolition of the death penalty. In opposing the death penalty, Amnesty International in no way seeks to minimize or condone the crimes for which those sentenced to death were convicted. But, the finality and cruelty inherent in the death penalty render an inappropriate and unacceptable response to violent crime. As numerous studies demonstrate, the death penalty system is fundamentally flawed. Mounting evidence reveals the arbitrary and capricious manner in which the death penalty is administered at every level.
