Howard Dean's wife Judith Steinberg accompanies Dean and their son Paul to a courtroom hearing last month. This was a rare public appearance by the former first lady of Vermont. Shown at right is a publicity photo released by the Dean Campaign.

I was wondering about that. Is it some kind of trend among Dems for their wives to keep their own names when they are married?

You probably are on to something about his character. I just think we have to be careful and subtle about how we make that point.

She could use some serious dental work as well. Oh oh. Now the self proclaimed politically correct saints are going to harass you. You know the PC rules about special womans protections !!!!

I think you are correct. Dr. Steinberg wears no make-up and has that serious look I often so in female science majors I went to school with.
She isn't really unattractive, except when compared to people with professional hairstyles and make up treatments.
But, the interesting thing is that she is almost a textbook example of passive-agressive behavior towards her husband. She refuses to campaign, makes no effort to spruce up, and generally ignores his efforts. I find this very interesting and indicative of how she feels about his career.

Hasn't she already indicated she has no interest in being a "First Lady" - rather, she'll continue to practice medicine (don't know if that means she wouldn't even move to D.C. if Daffy were elected)?

Guess that leaves Dean out.

I believe you are correct. Of course, this places the family in a quandary...live in DC with the father, or stay in Vermont with her? And just because she stays in Vermont doesn't mean that she won't have all those intrusions from the press, Secret Service, etc.
I find it fascinating that people aren't paying attention to the real important part of this story.
Are they cousins?

I noticed some of the replies to your comment after I wrote mine. Apparently, some people are way to serious on PC issues. Don't think Lazamataz is tuned in today. He really gets people going with his non PC, especially issues dealing with women.

(Laura Ingraham and Ann Coulter are living proof that not all blondes are dumb.)

You could very well be correct. But perhaps she is just extremely introverted? For a long time Laura Bush was pretty reluctant to enter the spotlight, too.
But perhaps the Dean campaign is reacting/oversensitive to the Hillary backlash effect.
Or maybe it is as simple as she just wanting to remain discreet, in the background, and uninvolved, and it isn't a reflection on her opinion of his views/campaign. I just don't know.
Bottom line, I bet she ends up being an asset for the Dean campaign.

After seeing the wife, my only question is... how many affairs has he had?
The combo of attitude, ego and her face will lead to an affair 90% of the time.

This is the kind of thread you would see on DU.
To: sciencediet
Why are her appearances rare?Because she usually only comes out on Groundhog's Day ;-)

Nothing wrong in taking a close look at potential first ladies.

Is she out of the limelight because she is busy with her own career, or is she out of the limelight because Dean wants to keep her under wraps?Though it is tacky to comment on someone's looks, there is no denying that she is a homely woman.
My guess is that she doesn't "Focus Group" well because of her looks and is thus being kept in the attic.
Not fair....but what is?
To: Hildy
I don't think it is fair of us to make fun of her appearance.. she is a doctor with her own practice and probably knows her husband doesn't have a chance in hell to win!!
We have enough on him to critize and deplore.. lets not be cruel concerning a person's looks..please

Many professional women with degrees in their own name don't change their last name when marrying.
If you go to a doctor Smith's office and all the diplomas on the wall are in the name of Johnson...it would be confusing to say the least.
When applying for a position at a company and documentation is asked for and it's all in another name than the one you use, that can also lead to confusion.
The entire question of whose name to use is rather short sighted and silly........IMO of course.

Aside from Mrs. Dean one thing is for sure. Smiling is not Mr. Deans natural state. I think Rush has this boy pegged right. If nominated at some point before the election he's gonna become unglued.
