Stock up the freezer if you like steak because beef prices at the supermarket are on their way up. And they're likely to stay there for a while.
U.S. cattle prices are at a record high, say economists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They've increased 34% since July, and this month the benchmark price of Nebraska choice steers went from $90 to $116 per 100 pounds. A year ago, the price per 100 pounds was $64.

I've got 8 goats here including 3 kids born in June and, I think, one that's pregnant. If I thought my 3 daughters wouldn't kick me out of the house, I might be tempted to taste them too. But it was all I could do to get them to let me sell them at market when it's time.

Goat bar-b-que is very good. We used to eat it all the time.

We raise our own beef. Have 3 steers going to the butcher in a couple of weeks. You know what your cattle is fed so you know what you are eating is healthy. No hormones, etc. If you are set up for it and have the time I highly recommend you raise your own.
Beef prices at the cattle auction here (Pacific NW) have gone up considerably in the last year. Also, the price for selling beef the way we do (1/2 or whole steer) has gone up about .20 per pound. We still have 1/2 steer for sale. Home raised angus beef anyone?

Hey, I really enjoyed reading about your ancestor Jesse Walling on your home page. Very cool. It must give you a lot of pride to know about someone like him in your ancestry.
My claim to fame, besides that I have ancestors who were here in the 1500s, is that I'm related to both FDR and Winston Churchill. It's nothing very direct, but my uncle explained it all to me. We'll just say they were my distant cousins.

Don't forget Tyson Foods. They sell beef at Walmart.
Both of these corporations have used illegal aliens. Now where is that argument of cheap prices and the need for illegal aliens??????

Who am I missing? When I saw your post, I wondered what might have prompted such a reply. So, I looked at #13 (the post you replied to ;-). It says, "We've been talking about buying a calf and raising our own beef. This seems like a great time to do it."
Thus, in saying "Who am I missing," I thought perhaps you were wondering which of your family pets was on the dinner table.
("Ping" would have made your intentions perfectly clear. :-D )

LOL! Great pix! People in the beef industry will refer to chicken as "yard carp". Some cattle producers will barely eat pork,---nevermind chicken....justfuhgeddaboutit!!
We stocked our freezer a few weeks ago. With beef and pork. No chicken.

If I thought my 3 daughters wouldn't kick me out of the houseLOL!
My husband suffers from the same problem...
He tells our twin daughters and me we have "Bambi syndrome."
We were discussing the price of beef last night, and I told him if meat got too outrageous I could probably manage to overcome mine.
Thanks for the compliment on my homepage BTW.
I just wish I could find out what Jesse Walling's political stance was. I've been unable to locate any legislative records from that time period.
Your homepage looks great! (That HTML thingy still gives me fits:) Knowing about one's ancestors gives a person a sense of continuity. (And I've always admired Winston Churchill.)

Cargill, ADM, and the huge feedlot operators will see the real profit here. The packers always do better than the cow-calf producer, but the ranchers are benefiting from this as well. Before we moved down here we sold our little Black Angus herd and the calves went for $0.89/pound. A friend just sold some calves for $1.18/pound...nice 33% increase in two years.

Hey Cuttn -
Good to see ya here on the meat thread.
If the big players ever realize their dream of controlling the grains, the feedlots, and the packing houses $25/lb. beef will seem down-right cheap. imo
Cheers down there.

Hi pal Loddy,
Beef is very reasonably priced down here and good quality. Also, I can walk in to the big super market and have the choice of buying beef from the USA, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay or Brazil. They have agreements on country of origin labeling, something that is being resisted in the US.

Thanks, Kurt.
