I heard echoes of Castro, said Cuban American refugee businessman

See the link. I’m speaking to you today because I’ve seen people like this before. I’ve seen movements like this before. I’ve seen ideas like this before and I’m here to tell you, we cannot let them take over our country,” Álvarez asserted, referring both to Democrat Party presidential nominee Joe Biden and to the socialist faction of the party that largely supported rival Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

“I know all about the past — I’ll never forget my own. My family has fled totalitarianism and communism. And more than once. First, my dad from Spain, then from Cuba,” Álvarez relayed. “But my family is done running away. By the grace of God, I have lived the American dream — the greatest blessing I’ve ever had.

“I’m speaking to you today because my family is done abandoning what we rightfully earned. There is no place to hide,” he insisted.

Personally, this was the most moving speech of this evening. The guy was speaking with tears and crying. And he is right, there is no return from socialism and misery.

Re: his family leaving totalitarian Spain - is he referring to Franco?

I’ve heard other Cuban expatriates speaking the same way, almost all of my life.

These are the ‘forgotten’ Hispanics.

Democrats don’t give a damn about them.

Comparing them to Castro is a badge of honor for the Dims.

I live in a very rural area in the West and have only met one Cuban refugee in my life and he said pretty much the same thing to me: “Always vote Republican, never for the Socialist Democrats.”

What difference does it make?

They wanted to be free of dictators of ALL stripes; just free to make their own individual ways in the world.

My parents also fled tyranny with the shirts on their backs. My mother finds this very familiar as well - akin to 1930’s Europe. She is very worried about the mail-in voting and ignorance of history among our citizenry.

I’ve met Ethiopians who came here seeking political asylum, and said pretty much the same.

His grandfather fled Spain, and his father fled Cuba.

My eyes were wet when he spoke. These are similar words of love for our country that my 4 grandparents spoke to me as a child (I am 70 and still hear their words).

I am a native Floridian, but second generation immigrant family from Europe. My childhood friends were often Cuban. I’ve heard the horror stories from their families of Castro and his regime, how they murdered so many of their family members, often right in front of their eyes. I can’t ever forget their stories of what the parents and grandparents of my friends witnessed, and what they fled. Communism is a hell hole. The Castros were vicious animals. Calling them people would be far too kind.

It’s a matter close to my heart because my great-grandfather served in the Spanish foreign service and had deep reservations about Franco...but as a monarchist and a Catholic, felt so strongly about defeating the communists.

Navigating the complexity of that time is something I find interesting.
