I can certainly understand your interest. Individuals have always been in the position of having to be ‘in the world but not of it’ and required to ‘render unto Caesar’. Everyone has to make these decisions according to their own lights, from within the temporal situations that they may find themselves.
But I don’t believe that personal, individual Liberty is ultimately a zero-sum game of choosing between one sort of dictatorial control and another.
People can be - and have been - ‘free’ within themselves, even in chains or prison, even while being burned at the stake in the South of France or an island in the Seine.
I think that’s one of the ideas that Jesus tried to make us understand. Nobody has ever been truly ‘saved’ by putting faith in frail human leaders and ideologies; even our Founders put their faith in God as the author of our liberties.
(It’s also a wise ‘place to stand’ from which to Fight.)
