Sanders was asked by Chuck Todd for his reaction to the attack on the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, FL, and he said, Its horrific. Its unthinkable, and just hopes go out to those who were shot that they can recover, and Ive got to tell you for twenty-five years now, Ive believed that we should not be selling automatic weapons which are designed to kill people, and weve got to do everything we can on top of that to make sure that guns do not fall into the hands of people who should not have them. Criminals and people who are mentally ill, so that struggle continues.
Todd followed up by asking if the nation can ever have a conversation about terrorism and guns without politicization. Sanders answered, I do, Chuck. Because I think that there is a very broad consensus in this country, not a hundred percent of the people, overwhelming majority of gun owners and non-gun owners understand that we have got to do everything we can to prevent guns from falling into the hands of people who should not have them. That means expanding the instant background check. It means doing away with the gun show loophole. It means addressing the strawman provision. I think there is a wide consensus to move forward in that direction.
After each mass shooting, pro-gun extremists always tell the nation that now is not the time to have the discussion about the ease of the ability to purchase deadly weapons in this country. They said it wasnt time after Sandy Hook. They said it wasnt time after Charleston, and they will say that it isnt time after Orlando, but if not now, when?
What the NRA and others never say is that in their view there will never be a good time. No one is talking about confiscating weapons or taking guns away, just ending the enabling of mass killers. Sen. Sanders was correct. There is a broad consensus on the steps that he outlined nationally. What is missing is Congressional Republicans with the guts to take action.
If the Republicans get booted out of the Congressional majority in November, it is a certainty that Democratic president and Congress would take long overdue steps on gun violence because this isnt political. Its national security.
Does Bernie represent Brooklyn? Or does he represent VT? Sorry, but I recently spent a week with a 30+ y.o. white male who owns a business in VT. Quite possibly the stupidest— most commercially ignorant— human being I have been compelled by circumstance to spend time with.
If you’re from VT, move. Again, some people are too stupid to be free.
is a two quart glass bottle of gasoline and a book of matches a more deadly weapon than a semi-automatic long gun??????
We need a ban on comments from the socialist and the criminal.
Great clarification! Thanks!
I notice the media are referring to the jihadi’s long gun as an “assault” weapon or rifle. To your knowledge, is that correct usage?
So now you are calling me stupid based on an observation of one individual you met and a commie from Burlington? I live as far away from Burlington as one can get in this state, and as far away from most humanity as nearly anyone in the country. I hope you do too because when the SHTF if you are not in the same or better position than I am, we’ll just see who has more freedom. And as far as judging me, F.U.
You live in the Bahamas?
Fang & I live on the river; have for 30 yrs. now. We have to
have some firepower here to deal with the stuff that comes
up from time to time - rattlesnakes, copperheads, bobcats,
coyotes, rabid animals, the occasional ranging bear on its
way north (where they’ll shoot him up there in a NY minute).
We live in REALVILLE, NOT in Quicheville where Bernie’s
from.
Thinking it through, the killer would have to walk in the door firing as fast as he could, from a 30 round mag. The second he emptied it, he'd have to speed change to another full 30 round mag, then continue firing as rapidly as possible.
In order for him to hit 103 bodies, he'd also have to be on the move, changing his point of aim, looking for and acquiring fresh targets, all while absolute pandemonium was breaking out all around him - all while staying collected enough to realize when it was time for another change of mags.
This guy had to have been highly trained, and was possibly even under the influence of some strong narcotics. Jihadists have been known to mentally prepare themselves for such attacks by loading up on heavy drugs.
The talking points are bit more insidious than that. While everyone from Obama to Fox News has been parroting the word "automatic," no one seems to have noticed Obama's call (in not so many words) for the prohibition of "military" ammunition (which no civilian needs blah blah blah).
As everyone here knows, "military" ammunition is the least deadly, due to the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit the use of soft/hollow point bullets, AKA common hunting and civilian defensive rounds.
I forsee some brutally "comprehensive" legislation being fast-tracked at a rate to make heads spin.
With respect to the "automatic" talking point, I am reminded of an early draft of the last "assault" weapons ban ("assault weapon" of course being a term of art, there being no such thing in the real world).
In that draft, "semi-automatic" firearms were to be prohibited. In a separate place in the bill, "repeating" arms were defined as "semi-automatic"!
Stroke of the pen, and all that.
I suspect that the ban currently slogging its way through the process will be allowed to die on the vine. In its place will be introduced -- with great fanfare -- "The Mother of All Bans," putatively written in response to the latest act of war against us, but in reality, crafted over a period of months if not years, and waiting in the wings for the most opportune moment.
I can't see much (other than token) opposition from either side of The One Political Party. And Obama, clutching to this as "His Legacy," will gladly trade off some scraps to the GOPe, just to ensure the lack of opposition.
I am a crippled old man, but I weep for my children...
That’s Funny , Bernie!
Their quest is to use the “gun violence” issue as a scapegoat against assuming any counter intelligence blame for a Terrorist Attack on American soil while also promoting their ultimate goal of removing guns from the citizens.
The term being bandied about today ("assault rifle") is clearly in the talking points, Bile O'Really being the latest to cough the hairball into the airwaves a minute or two ago.
Bernie like all brain dead libs has a rapid fire automatic blame the guns response...

I’ve seen some mentions today that the killer did military style training in Afghanistan. It would go a long way toward explaining how he managed to kill or wound over a hundred people with a semi-auto rifle.
... jihad’s gun as assault...
It is not an assault rifle unless it it full automatic, under current BATF definition.
Even then, assault rifle is a recently invented term by those who want to negate the second amendment.
Under their definition a rifle is an assault rifle if it has three of five possible features.
1). Detachable magazine holding more than 10 rounds
2). Bayonet lug
3). Pistol grip
4). Flash suppressor
5). Folding stock.
The caliber of the bullet it shoots doesn’t matter, so two guns can fire a bullet at the same speed and one might not be defined as an assault rifle.
The Ruger .223 Ranch Rifle and the M-16 can launch an identical slug at the same speed, but only the M-16 is ‘assault’.
Assault Rifle has mostly replaced the term ‘high powered rifle’ that was give to any long gun used in a crime. High Power was never defined, and neither was Low Power.
Hope this helps.
I saw a news clip of Bernie saying “automatic weapons”. Also saw a clip of Shumer saying something like ...the public shouldn’t be allowed to buy weapons that the military uses. Guess he thinks the military uses AR-15s.
I bet if you left loaded weapons on several tables at the nightclub, the only person to use one to kill everybody would have been Mateen. Most people really are not killers, even if they have the means to be.
Doesnt seem too farfetched to me, considering that he shot over 100 people within minutes.

He was inside for about 3 hours before the SWAT finally went after him.
Current LEOs are a few decades behind the times, as they still think they can use a negotiator to talk shooters into giving up. The rad Islamic terrorists want to kill, not talk.
Please educate yourself before spewing such ignorance.
