To his credit, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas admits he is not a warm and fuzzy guy. In the town hall before Wisconsin's primary, he acknowledged, What I will say is I'm a pretty driven guy. That has pros and cons. I have always been a very driven guy. In a GOP debate in October, he offered, If you want someone to grab a beer with, I may not be that guy. But if you want someone to drive you home, I will get the job done and I will get you home.
Now it is true that the most likable candidate usually wins a high-stakes race. George W. Bush beat then-Sen. John Kerry handily on the want to have a beer with question. Ronald Reagan was the quintessential likable candidate; as an actor he knew how to engage an audience. But in not every election does the nation or a party pick the most congenial candidate.
Richard Nixon was not likable, but in 1968 he was offering what the country felt it needed. William Schneider wrote in the National Journal in 2000, Nixon was no more likable in 1968 (than in 1960). But he won that year because the country was in crisis. So what if he wasn't such a nice guy? Voters wanted someone who knew what he was doing.(continued)

They’re dead, or didn’t you hear?
Of Canada is more like it!
He's transplanTED.
Driving me home? Didn’t he get pulled over by cops for having open booze in his car?
But he’s right. He’s an egotistical, power-crazed man with not a scintilla of warmth or recognizable human qualities. That is why he uses that Uriah Heep voice when he tries to project sincerity and hide his relentless ambition.
ImporTED. He should be deporTED.
Nopardons - my husband was Nixon’s dog walker when he moved to NYC. My husband was about 10 years old and would travel down from the Bronx to take the little dog on his walks. He liked Nixon very much. Tricia Nixon attended my college in NYC (several years after me) and everyone spoke highly of Mr. Nixon when he would visit the cafeteria to greet all the day students and shake the hands of the workers. He didn’t like going into the gorgeous dining rooms because they were full of snotty, rich girls! He preferred hanging out with ordinary people.
Nixon was a brilliant man and a good president. And, indeed, he was harried by the left. A good friend of mine and a Nixon-hater in the 50s always said: He was right! We were out to get him! Later on, this friend became a good friend of Roy Cohn and regretted his earlier hatred.
Resign? He shouldn’t even be allowed to run. He isn’t eligible - he isn’t a natural born citizen. Besides that - he has the ick factor. Most women find him repulsive.
Cruzbots lack good judgment. It is their candidate who lies and yet they accuse everyone else of this trait. It’s called projection. They call evil good and good evil.
Cruz is no Nixon. Nixon had principles and while he did violate his principles at least he regretted doing that. Cruz has no principles and never regrets any of his evil doings.
Ah... I see. Then that must mean that Trump’s 30% favorable rating is golden!
Good Lord save us...
A Cruz supporter who wants to bring back the monarchy to the US? Why am I not surprised?!
I lived during the Nixon years. I never met him but I still say he was one of our BEST Presidents. I too was screaming he should have got rid of the tapes. A great man who loved our country.
P.S.
He winning as well. With more votes and more delegates.
Who cares if anybody likes him. The surgeon who removed my cancer was a pompous, arrogant, egotistical sob, and an absolute genius at what he did. I would never choose to be around him, unless my life depended on it. This is not an election for student body president; it’s is the selection of the one person in who’s hand the destiny of the free world may depend. Give me a g—damn break.
Generally speaking, repulsive, beady-eyed, greasy, nasal whining, televangelist types aren’t winning many presidential elections. At least not since TV became a major factor.
Cruz is no conservative. Cruz’s a liberal interventionist. Trump’s the only conservative. Trump’s an isolationist.
Bears repeating.
Consider the source. You have hit the nail on the head.
LOL Still proclaiming third place is a win. And now the Ick factor is an advantage.
When is he going to tell us that lying is the most important skill you can have as president?
