Cruz isn't likable -- and that's an asset
The Chicago Tribune ^ | April 8, 2016 | Jennifer Rubin, The Washington Post

Posted on 04/09/2016 12:38:12 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

To his credit, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas admits he is not a warm and fuzzy guy. In the town hall before Wisconsin's primary, he acknowledged, “What I will say is I'm a pretty driven guy. That has pros and cons. I have always been a very driven guy.” In a GOP debate in October, he offered, “If you want someone to grab a beer with, I may not be that guy. But if you want someone to drive you home, I will get the job done and I will get you home.”

Now it is true that the most likable candidate usually wins a high-stakes race. George W. Bush beat then-Sen. John Kerry handily on the “want to have a beer with” question. Ronald Reagan was the quintessential likable candidate; as an actor he knew how to engage an audience. But in not every election does the nation or a party pick the most congenial candidate.

Richard Nixon was not likable, but in 1968 he was offering what the country felt it needed. William Schneider wrote in the National Journal in 2000, “Nixon was no more likable in 1968 (than in 1960). But he won that year because the country was in crisis. So what if he wasn't such a nice guy? Voters wanted someone who knew what he was doing.”(continued)

An interesting topic.

My liberal relatives overweight the importance of the so-called "Ick Factor."

It shouldn't be a popularity contest.

Regards,

Miss Rubin is a RINO, at best, isn't old enough to have known what Nixon was really like, only what others claimed he was, and is very wrong about him! Mr. Nixon WAS a "likeable" guy! He was a true gentleman, very intelligent, harried by lefties beyond belief for most of his adult life and REALLY connected very well with most people.

This is a stupid article and not worth what it cost me to read it; which was nothing monetarily, but a waste of my time...which is valuable to me.

Jen Rubin must be rolling over in her living hell of a grave to write something positive about Ted Cruz.

I used to joke that the name of her column should be, “Why I hate Ted Cruz and everyone else should too”.

I knew people that knew him, like Al Haig, and that’s what they seemed to think.

It’s been a popularity contest for 60 years. I laugh when they compare Nixon to Cruz. I see it...both sneaky crooks. Cruz could be the second president to resign to escape impeachment.

Naps, if I told you tomorrow that Cruz cured cancer your reply would probably be “all kinds of cancer or just the kind the Bilderbergers get?”

This is one click away from "I knew Richard Nixon and you're no Richard Nixon."

He could've indicted Fonda for treason but the treasonous press prevented it.

Watergate was Helms putting McCord (and Hunt, Sturgis, Barker et al) on a provocation to take out RMN.

Woodward the Navy spook 'hepped'.

China '72 was momentous: the basis of the modern world.

Cruz is unlikable. Pontificates in a voice that routinely etches glass.

Wife dipped in Goldman Sachs. While Neil Bush joins bundlers.

Publicly eschewing Kasich the Soros puppet.

Secretly thinking he'll be their huckleberry.

Nixon was replaced by Ford who appointed Rocky to whitewash CIA and GHWB as DCI to sanitize the HSCA witness list.

The only one acceptable to the Power is Hillary.

The current business model is more and more islamonazi chaos.

That and race war, financial collapse, general anarchy followed by a limited exchange of tacnukes and milsats.

Go home, Ted.

Nixon won in 1960 too. JFK has his daddy and mob boss Sam Giancanna to thank for the massive fraud in Chicago that led to JFK “winning”.

Great post, Phil!

Actually, I actually DID know Mr. Nixon; I worked on his two winning presidential campaigns and went to the Inaugural Balls.

Sadly, most people and far too damned many posters here, don't know anything at all about him except the lefty propaganda, which they spew over and over again, with NO knowledge of what they are doing. That always makes my blood boil; I hate stupidity!

That’s absolutely true and Mr. Nixon refused to do anything about it, because he didn’t want to throw this nation into chaos.

I knew him ( not well, but I did know him! ) and worked on his winning presidential campaigns. I followed his career from the time I was little and always liked him, until the end, when I yelled at the T.V. :”YOU SHOULD HAVE DESTROYED THE TAPES, YOU SHOULD HAVE DESTROYED THOSE DAMNED TAPES!”; but got over it and still like him.

WHO morning host Michelson claimed Nixon abused the IRS--I emailed he did not, citing Ann Coulter who'd written Clinton did what Nixon was accused of doing. Michelson scoffed--but had Coulter on the following week, and is sidelined with a stroke. In truth Nixon was almost impeached for things he didn't do, but which Onambla has done in spades every day for seven years.

MR. NIXON WAS NEVER A "CROOK" AND YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT REFERRED TO!

Mr. Nixon was NOT "sneaky" and you need to read the truth about him and educate yourself!

Start be reading or watching the "CHECKERS SPEECH"!

Go look up his run for the Senate, which began the damned stinking COMMIES', FELLOW TRAVELERS', PINKOS', and just plain old LEFTIES' obsessive hatred of him.

Ted Cruz is Nothing at all like Mr. Nixon.

You are 100% correct!

I hate, hate, HATE what was and still is being done to Mr. Nixon and his memory! Even on this thread we have a posters repeating COMMIE LIES about him as "fact". I shall NEVER allow that to stand without factual refutation!

Thank you for your defense of President Nixon. I have listened to some of his tapes- they reveal an extremely intelligent person who had the best interests of the country at heart. Listen to his tape about Renquist v. Howard Baker for the Supreme Court!

You're welcome !

Yes, Mr. Nixon was a BRILLIANT man, who was brought down by decades of COMMIE harassment.

He was extremely "likeable" and the vast majority of things that people post here, about him, are unalloyed lefty propaganda and outright lies! He loved this nation, only had her best interests for her! He was human, not perfect, but neither was he anything even remotely like the "evil" caricature he has now been made out to be.

Dis-likability is an advantage for Cruz, but a liability for Trump...

Yet another example of the Cruzbots adopting Libtard reasoning.

My view of Nixon is summed up in his name, RIchard NixOn.

A more liberal Republican than Reagan, a pleaser of the corporate elites his comment being “We can’t run the world without China”.

In the 1850’s Japan was opened up to international business dealing and 90 years later the fruit was borne and we will remember the 75th anniversary of that ‘fruit’ later this year.

China is building up its military power and showing its aggressive intentions in the world we live in today.

When does the next Pearl Harbor happen and what will it be like? I think the answers are coming thanks to President Richard M. Nixon and Dr. Henry A. Kissinger.
