How the GOP's unhinged debate diminished both Donald Trump and Marco Rubio
The Week ^ | February 26, 2016 | James Poulos

At an unhinged moment in the 2016 presidential primary season, the Republican candidates turned in a fine set of unhinged performances at Thursday night's critical debate.

Let's begin with Donald Trump, far and away the strongest contender, be it in Ted Cruz's backyard or Marco Rubio's home state. For the first time, he met his rhetorical match in a surprisingly vitriolic Rubio. The Florida senator devoted himself to going shout-for-shout with Trump, dragging out old scandals and unseemly details that put the mogul's present-day promises in an unflattering light. But even when Trump visibly ground his gears, he stayed characteristically unflappable. He's got a big enough cushion to risk staying the course. Although he lost the initiative last night, the game was not changed.

From the look on Rubio's face, however, you'd think there was a revolution onstage. With every attack on Trump, he preened and puffed. When Trump and Cruz mixed it up, Rubio visibly itched to squeeze in another zinger, another bullet point, another piece of evidence that he had graduated to the big leagues. (Those monitoring media Twitter might have felt the hovering presence of political helicopter parents -- established Rubio backers doling out anxious attaboys from the sidelines.)

Without a doubt, Rubio wins debates, and he won Thursday's contest, as the media, the focus groups, and the insiders will tell you. His scores, however, have yet to translate into a commensurate clutch of delegates. In this lopsided but unstable race, that might change. But I wouldn't bet on it....

I’ve tried to listen to Rubio, but I can’t listen as fast as he talks. I get the impression that he has all this stuff memorized, and he is under pressure to get it all out there before he forgets half of it.

I’ve listened to a few of Trump’s speeches, and he talks like the average person, shifting from one topic to another, sometimes in mid-thought, but overall it’s fairly easy listening, and you know for sure that he’s just talking, and reciting.

unhinged it was indeed.

Nonetheless, early post-debate poll results, show the losers ganging up to take down Trump didn’t work (e.g., http://polling.reuters.com/#!poll/TR130/type/smallest/filters/PARTY_ID_:2/dates/20160101-20160226/collapsed/false/spotlight/1).

After Trump sweeps the SEC primaries I recommend that he refuse to play that rigged game any longer. Trump should say that enough is enough and that these cage matches are hurting the party, and if the losers want to continue to debate each other, that’s fine with him, but winners don’t need to debate losers anymore, and he’s now focusing exclusively on taking Hillary out.

Perhaps Cruz wanted that authority for when he sat in that chair?

” to push the Iran deal”

REALLY?????

Cruz expressed disappointment with the Republican leadership in Congress for failing to take actions he proposed for blocking the Iran nuclear deal.

“This bill was a missed opportunity. If Congress had acted to defend our constitutional authority – if Congress had adopted the Cruz-Toomey amendment – then we would be able to stop a bad Iran deal. Instead, the odds are now overwhelming that under these ground rules President Obama will negotiate, and Congress will acquiesce to, a terrible deal that allows Iran to acquire nuclear weapons and will endanger the lives of millions of Americans and our allies.

Cruz is a lying snake. He takes some little piece of information like Trump’s tax returns and extrapolates that into a tax fraud story that he pushes everytime he gets a mic.

He’s done it over and over again and frankly he now turns my stomach.

As currently written, the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015 would first require Congress to pass a resolution of disapproval and then require Congress to muster votes from two-thirds of each chamber to override a Presidential veto. What’s more, if Congress failed to act within a set timeframe, the deal would go into effect by default. This process gets the Constitution’s allocation of authority precisely backwards.

The Cruz-Toomey amendment would remove these options and restore a more proper process for Congress to exercise its Constitutional power. It would require President Obama to persuade a majority of Senators and Representatives to approve his deal before it goes into effect.

That debate looked like two chihuahuas going after the alpha male dog. I found it hilarious. Woof woof.

Have they decided to leave Sen. Cruz out of today’s news cycle? He seems to be getting less attention than Dr. Carson. And that’s saying something!

If I remember correctly that fraud Dan Patrick supported Dewhurst over Cruz and was very hard on Cruz. Now he’s in an ad for him now running in Texas.

It is true, the chihuahuas yapped loudly last night (and that one shrieking hyena Rubio woman drove many people to turn down the volume), but today it is all Trump, all day, all the time, on every station in every discussion.

Cruzio who? Rubby Bot what?

Around 2 pm this afternoon CNN ran a live Trump speech from Texas for at least a half hour uninterrupted.

And it was a great speech. You heard about Rubio there — barbecued.
