In our church in the small town we used to live in, we took meals to families for all kinds of things .... deaths in the family, someone having surgery, the birth of a new baby .... during flu season, whoever didn't have the flu would cook meals for the family of those currently afflicted (and homemade soup for the sick one) ..... just all kinds of occasions

You forgot guys who can't cook.......:-)

We didn't let them take lima beans, though.

My community "bakes'n'takes" too. It's a German Catholic farm community. Most of us have been here since the wagons rolled in from Pennsylvania and Ohio.

My oldest DIL came from a larger town and was amazed at the food that came to her upon the birth of her children. She was grateful and amazed. Son said, "Gee, I remember you hauling food around, but I didn't realize how much people appreciate it until we needed some help"

That's the kind of neighborhood I grew up in, spent my childhood in...

..but nowadays, most folks are displaced....

...Our neighborhood and most around us are totally comprised of non Floridians...they're all transplants!

...so our church meets the needs of its immediate congregation, plus some outreach to the community.

Our youngsters & young adults in the church don't have the luxury of aunts/grandma/ or even mom/dad sometimes to ask help from or feel special to.....they're too far away.

So we ladies in the church become surrogate moms, so to speak, at many levels.

Shameful confession - when I would start to bake a cake, my kids would ask who I was taking it to. Guess I didn't do enough baking for the family ..... or at least it seemed that way to them ..... *sigh*

There's a contest at our local sports radio station called "Silly Underdog Picks." You pick two underdogs in college games and they must win outright. You get the points equal to the betting line that they were underdogs.

My first pick was Oregon over Michigan and I just garnered 7 or 8 points for that one. My second pick was Boise State over Oregon State and that game is tonight. I'm confident the Beavers will lose tonight.

Someday when we're really bored with the news we should trade secrets on foods that transport well. Lasanga and Beef and Noodles seem to be what goes out my door most frequently.

Howdy, for me its been a slow day, real slow. I have done nothing and that is with a capital N at that. Watched the LSU and Ga football game and wow, it was a doozy, LSU won by one touchdown right at the last of the game.

INDIANAPOLIS — In a memorial service Friday on the steps of the statehouse where he was first inaugurated seven years ago, Gov. Frank O'Bannon was honored with Irish tunes and military salutes and remembered as a man who was "proof that nice guys do finish first."

Thousands gathered to bid a final farewell to O'Bannon, who died after suffering a stroke earlier this month. The Democrat was 73.

The interfaith memorial service included a 19-round artillery salute and a barbershop quartet singing "Danny Boy."

"This spirit of being connected to something larger than ourselves was a hallmark of the way Frank O'Bannon approached life, and his death makes us feel the rightness of it ever more strongly," Indiana Chief Justice Randall Shepard said.

Lt. Gov. Joseph Kernan was sworn in as governor after O'Bannon's death last Saturday. O'Bannon suffered a stroke in a Chicago hotel room Sept. 8.

Members of Indiana's congressional delegation and several governors from other states attended the service. Schoolchildren escorted O'Bannon's widow, Judy, and their family to their seats.

Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne called O'Bannon "a wonderful role model and proof that nice guys do finish first."

Once about 20 years ago, during a horrible church fight when they succeded in closing our Parochial School, I threatened to form a new social group in the community to be known as "The Disciples of Ruth". The priest nearly fainted. HA! I guess he was familiar with the story of Ruth,

I know about Ruth...Boaz' Ruth.....and she's highly praised for obedience and honoring her committment, among other things.

Martha, of course, is known for serving....but also known, for not taking time to listen, as opposed to Mary.
They are both given respect, but Martha is often referenced as putting works before more enduring things.
