The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I am still lurking gang. My computer has still not arrived, but I am hoping before the new year it will arrive and I will be a full fledged FR hobbit fan member again. I miss the gang and the good talk. Hope to see the movie this weekend too.

a person who said they preferred four-part harmony 'cause that was the music God liked.

That was a stupid statement! I like your comeback, Corin! I love all kinds of liturgical music, but am particularly partial to the grand choral arrangements of the Anglicans. Our organist brings in some of those at Christmas and Easter for our Festival Choir. They are just lovely!

I like Medieval music, especially that of the Church because it is so comtemplative. My kids got me the Anonymous 4 recording of music by Abbess Hildegard of Bingen for the Feast of St. Ursula. I haven't listened to it yet, because I'm still listening to my Christmas CDs!

We don't do a whole lot of clapping in our Parish. When there is a Baptism, the congregation will clap for the new Parish member and the family, and Father Paul always acknowledges the Choir at Midnight Mass and Easter and the congregation will clap for us. This year, after finishing the Recessional Hymn, we went right into "Joy to the World" with the trumpets, timpanies and cymbal, and they clapped for us after that, too. It is kind of fun.

A few years ago, we had a black composer, Grayson Warren Brown, come in to our Lenten Mission. He led the congregation in some of his songs, and it was hilarious watching all those 'rhythm impaired' Yankees trying to clap on the FIRST beat of the measures rather than the second!

I took my best friend (who is Catholic) to a church service and she nearly fainted!

When we lived in New Jersey, we belonged to a Catholic Charismatic group. Talk about PRAISE! The singing would almost take the roof off the school where we had Mass! It was a great group of folks!

It's boring sometimes, not having electric guitars, but it helps me keep my priorities straight.

Jen, check around the Pitt area to see if any Parishes have the 'Life Teen' program. Their Masses are geared toward teens and young adults, and they usually play Christian Rock music. My brother in law had a group in his Parish, and when we took our #2 son there to be Confirmed, the Life Teen group played for the Mass. The Bishop just loved it; you could see his foot tapping to the beat of the music when he was sitting on the Altar!

You don't have to worry about your priorities with this music; even with the piano and electric guitars, it is definitely turned toward the Lord!

Yes, I'm in some of the pictures. You'll have to guess where.

Hmmm. Jr. looks like the tallest of King Cole's Fiddlers.

He's home right now from CMU, so I'll be happy to ask him. He's halfway through his Jr. year (and made all As last semester, to his surprise; Algorithms was a toughie, apparently) Anyway, next year he'll be a Senior, so he'll be looking into Grad schools as well. I'll let you know what he says.

Hello lurking Low Oil! I am thankful tonight that my computer works! - My power went out today at noon from high winds and just now came back on.

A tree went down on the street behind me and my power browned out, and while I was crawling under my desk to unplug the dang surge protector, my transformer on my pole began a low hum that lasted 10 seconds and then popped and everything went dark. I said a prayer for my computer, ate a whole bunch of leftover turkey, and put myself to sleep.

I like the Southern Baptist churches where they hand you a fan to cool yourself with when you walk in. They rocked in the aisles!

dixierose... thought I would show you the hobbit hole thread. This is where we just hang out and chit-chat. We started as LoTR fans, and it just kinda took off from there. You are welcome to come in and visit whenever you like. This is a "jump in when you can" kind of thread, no real ping list for it.

Folk: I am tellin' you... the kid is a cutie pie, as well as nice... read this article about his family and such!

Well, he's the one who deserves the Oscar nomination from the TTT film. His portrayal this time was downright perfect and the spiritual interaction between he, Sam and Smeagol stole the show from the great battle and pursuit scenes. Of the three in that "trinity" the Frodo character (Wood) wins out narrowly as the most "perfect" performance.

Just my two cents (or does someone already have that line?)

Hair: glad you and your computer made it through unscathed. That transformer hum is like a UFO sound effect; cool, but scary when it's yours.

So few at work today I had our GIS specialist show me how to get a cd to play in the computer. (I'm a 286 in a pentium world) Oh, the cd?, the TTT soundtrack. :-)

That hum was really freaky! I haven't heard that before.

The way the power browned out freaked me out too... I was sitting here, and my screen just started flickering and faded out. I wondered the whole time the power was out if I had witnessed my computer being fried from the inside.

The power crews will have a long night. I was lucky to be near the top of their list. High winds in timber country are a bad mix! I went out and thanked the power guys for their work... Said if I had power I would make them a hot coffee! - They said that would be very good indeed. I said I had cold beer, but they said maybe later. HA! They left right after the lights came on so I wasn't able to revisit it.

Scott, did your power stay on today?

John! You changed your screen name! LOL!!

Just kidding, scott!

I agree with your "two cents" about Elijah Wood, I smell an oscar in his future, if not, I think those Hollywood types are really crazed or smoking something.
