is the .223 a typical 'sniper' round?

i would have thought the .223 is a little 'light' for a tpical snipe round.. thought most military/etc snipers used a .308 or more powerful round.. or .. if they were going for quiet.. would =use a subsonic .22 lr

as for the al crapa 'link'..I think there is no link.... afterall, wouldnt they be using eastern block type caliber? since that is what they train with???

Well said. The media is going for sensational, but don't want to let facts get in thier way. I have been really suprised that on FR there are so many posters, that know absolutely nothing about weapons.

They have so much to learn and so little time to learn it.

You are exactly right about pistols being much easier to hit with than most people think.

When I was in grad school there were about 5 students in our department who were shooting enthusiasts. We generally shot most weekends. By the time I graduated we had maybe a dozen regular shooters, many of them had never shot a pistol in their life.

One of our favorite pastimes was to line up a row of 12 guage shotgun shells (empties) at about 50 yards in an old clay pit. We would shoot at them mostly with .22's. Even the ones who had never shot until we showed them how, could hit the shells pretty regularly, maybe once in three shots. A couple of the better shots could hit them most of the time.

Now I will admit that at least half the hits were the result of hitting under the shell and having dirt knock the shells over or having the bullet bounce into the shell, but still the new shooters were amazed how well they could hit once they realized it was possible.

I agree, they use that round because they they do not want the bullet to exit the perp and hit some one else, thus the short range and exploding charachter of the projectile.

The Military likes it because it causes far more injuries, than death, takes two or three soldiers off the battle field to take an injured soldier for treatment. Takes no soldiers off the field if the enemy is dead. Tom

I never dreamed I could use a .45 auto on a tree stump at 200 yards. OK, I didn't say I hit it. LOL.

You're kidding right? Have you ever shot this rifle?

Call me a wimp but I wouldn't shoot a 7mag. It would take me too long to cure the resulting flinch. 308 Win recoil and muzzle blast are mild by comparison.

You might want to put this rifle through its paces just to make sure it doesn't loosen up that Weaver.

It depends upon the load of the the bullet. It also depends on the weather, rain, fog, wind, have an effect on the laser site. Think about it...

You're right. From the age of 11, I would go, by myself I might add, into the woods and shoot magnolia blossoms out of trees with 22 shorts (they were cheaper and if they ricocheted(sp), they wouldn't go as far). Some people might say that is too young for a kid to shoot unsupervised, but I had good training. I also drove a car on the public roadway solo at 11 years of age. I had a full-fledged drivers license at fourteen.

i use a 3 x 9 for long range (100 yds.) here on an 06.

While you are shooting your pistol at me at 100 yards, I will nail you with an arrow.

50% probability I will hit you at 100 with the first shot with my .45. 100% you will be hit after a second shot a few seconds later. Maybe not a kill shot, but a hit just the same. And I'm not all that good. It really isn't hard with practice and after seeing it done. The biggest problem in long range pistol is gettng rid of the idea that you can't do it. Most pistol rounds don't have much energy left at longer ranges though.

Actually, the station that did the interview is pretty good to us gun-owners.

We let them in at tour shows because they are more pro-gun than the other stations. The parts he did leave in were direct comments about 'ballistic profiling' and how simple it is to change.

It was a 3-minute report. Not a whole lot of time for a whole lot of comments. My phone rang all the next day from gun-owners AND anti's.

The gun-owners thanked me, and the anti's ranted.

As President of The New Mexico Gun Collectors Association (www.nmgca.org) I have had to put up with these antics all year and it will continue next year when we go to the Statehouse for Concealed Carry again. No biggie. I have been arguing 2nd Amendment issues for about 30 years.

I son't understand the problem you and some others are having with the Garand. I've seen thousands of rounds put through them without problems.

At any rate this sniper has some actual killing experience now eh? What kind of sniper doesn't really matter. He could be a quaker for all we now. What type of gun he's using and where he was trained (if it is in fact a he) isn't of much relevence. He has a gun and can shoot straight enough to do what he's doing.
