Good morning!

We have co-op on Mondays and I'm so dead tired the rest of the day. Today we have school here at home.

I'm reading a book called Educating the Whole Hearted Child

Has anyone read this book?

Non-teachers suggested for U.S. shortage

Now *THIS* is interesting.

Secretary of Education Rod Paige says a shortage of public school teachers could be ended if states put qualified non-teachers in classrooms, but he says the National Education Association, the biggest teachers union, is standing in the way.

"There are still some guardians of mediocrity out there fighting to keep the status quo," Paige said Monday in an interview with USA TODAY and Gannett News Service reporters.

"I have been very troubled by the positions the NEA has taken and in general consider them to be guardians of the status quo."

Paige is encouraging states to look for teachers other than the traditional graduates of four years of college classes in education. In some cases, he says, professional experience could substitute for academic requirements. He suggests that a retired military physicist could teach science, for example.

Or better yet, PARENTS teaching their children??

Paige, who ran Houston's public schools before President Bush chose him to head the Education Department, says, "You can't make the case that these alternative certified people are less qualified to teach than those who come through the traditional system."

Certification smertification.

Re; Read anything good lately? This is from Immanuel Kant, an essay called "What is Enlightenment?"

(I was thinking of this when I saw the post saying we homeschool FReepers need a slogan and a flag.)

Enlightenment is man's release from his self incurred tutelage. Tutelage is man's inability to make use of his understanding without direction from another. Self incurred is this tutelage when its cause lies not in lack of reason but in lack of resolution and courage to use it without direction from another. Sapare aude! literally Dare to know!Have courage to use your own reason! that is the motto of enlightenment.

Another great quote: Courage is not simply one of the virtues but the form of every virtue at the testing point." C.S.Lewis

Don't hold your breath that this is going to happen real soon. The ivy halls of academia look upon military training with a very jaundiced eye. Besides, how can anything liberal respect anything that comes out of the military?

I was just informed that the nursing program at the university will not accept my microbiology class that I had in the Air Force. The irony of this is that the micro class I had in the AF was for the medical lab tech program. My AF class was 3 times harder than the community college course that I will be taking.

The AF class was for 6 hours a day for 6 weeks with a final exam that included 10 unknown organisms. The college course is less than 2 hours a day for 12 weeks with a final exam that has 3 unknown organisms. Go figure!

Remember the thread which discusses the Vermont homeschooling mother, Patricia O'Dell?

This is being discussed at a homeschool message board and many feel that this may be a hoax. I did some searches on this story and I could not find very much. I did however, find a link via Google to the same exact story that was posted the other day but in this Google search, which led me to FR, the posting date was 2001.

What is with this story?

Did you hear about this?

The Federal Elections Commission (FEC) has cleared the National Education Association (NEA) Washington, D.C. -The Federal Elections Commission (FEC) has cleared the National Education Association (NEA) and closed the file on a frivolous complaint filed by the right-wing Landmark Legal Foundation.

In a letter sent on September 6, 2002, the FEC said the Commission would "take no action against NEA" and that it would close the file.

The complaint incorrectly alleged the NEA was using dues dollars to make contributions to candidates for public office.

"The NEA's political activities have always been within the letter and spirit of the law," said NEA President Reg Weaver. "Our actions will remain part of a strong tradition in America of giving a voice to the hard-working men and women of this country. We will not be deterred by these frivolous, disingenuous allegations."

The National Education Association supports candidates who support children and public education through mobilizing its members, discussing education issues and giving direct contributions to candidates from The NEA Fund for Children and Public Education, a political action committee that is funded through voluntary contributions from NEA members.

"This is a victory for working families everywhere," said Weaver." Attempts by any group to silence the voices of the working men and women of this country will hopefully continue to be stopped by our legal system.

"Any group primarily funded by right-wing extremists who are out of touch with America's working families, wastes valuable taxpayer dollars with these false accusations," Weaver said. "It's my goal to get everyone focused on making public schools great for every child."

The National Education Association is the nation's largest professional employee organization, representing 2.7 million elementary and secondary teachers, college faculty, education support professionals, school administrators, retired educators, and students preparing to become teachers. __________________________________________________

Help! I just spent $120.00 at Staples for a few folders, printer cartridges and crayons. Does anyone have a resource for office/ school supplies that are more affordable. I was in Walmart yesterday and came home frustrated and empty handed.

The printer cartridges are what did you in. Try purchasing them online. Some brands have cartridges that are refillable. Check to see if your is one of them, your savings could be substantial.
