There have been 27 attacks on commercial ships so far in October, according to the International Maritime Organization. There were 22 in March, as well as attacks on an offshore rig and two tugs, according to a list of attacks compiled by USNI News.
Despite the number of attacks, ships are continuing to sail through the strait. There were 104 non-Iranian-linked vessels that sailed through between Oct. 5-11, during which there were 12 attacks, according to data from London-based maritime intelligence firm Lloyd’s List. Of those, six occurred on Oct. 11, according to the IMO.
While Iran is at fault for the majority of attacks, the U.S. has disabled a number of ships as part of its two-part blockade.
Iran is not going after specific ships, Noam Raydan, a senior fellow at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, told an audience at Lloyd’s List Outlook Forum on Wednesday in New York. But Iran does not have to hit every ship or a specific company to keep the risk high, Raydan said.
To support U.S. operations against Iran, the Navy has maintained a two-carrier presence in the Arabian Sea for six months, according to the USNI News Fleet and Marine Tracker. Additionally, an Amphibious Ready Group embarked with a Marine Expeditionary Unit has been on station in the Middle East since early March, and more than a dozen independent deployers have surged to the region.
Iran can hit one or two ships, hail another one and make them turn around or keep another in the Persian Gulf. That all keeps the risks high for vessels, she said.

Take out Kharg and a lot of this ends.
Then why aren’t you working for Adm Cooper? You could set him straight.
His bona fides are 3 paragraphs long in wiki
Naval academy
Natl intelligence university (MS)
Tufts
Harvard
Go tell him.
Kind of surprised since the price has slowly been going down at the gas station I use
They are including U.S. disabling Iranian ships in their total to make the numbers bigger.
They’ve been laughing at us all year. When you say the strait is safe and secure you have to back it up with more than just hot air. America’s word used to mean something.
So, in this "statistical analysis" anything that the US does to enforce the blockade is also counted as an attack! And this is so typical of reporting these days. Our biased media, up to and including the “US Naval Institute” just cannot help themselves.
As far as I am concerned, President Trump's finest hour was taking on the world's leading exporter of terrorism for the last 50 years.
What frustrates me is that Trump could tell Hegseth to do this at any time, and you just know that Pete is just waiting for that call.
That was my thought as well as what do they consider an incident or attack? Does another small boat coming within a few hundred feet of a tanker or other ship constitute an attack or incident?
I voted for Trump the Jacksonian not Trump the Carterite.😡
WTI is over $100 now. It was down to $88.
This is why the fact that the flow of oil is at 70% of pre war levels doesn’t have much impact. The cost to get it out is significantly higher. The costs for ship rental alone has increase by a ridiculous number per day. It now costs less to launch Falcon9 into space than ship a tanker of oil. There’s also the insurance cost increases as well.
I frankly don’t believe this.
Zero reports from any other outlets.
The bait and switch has been disappointing.
It seems obvious, to me, that President Trump wants to protect the world’s oil supply. Kharg will be part of that, when this is over. In the meantime, I expect Iran is getting exactly ZERO out of Kharg. What they have been able to sell is already in tankers, outside the Straight.
There must also be quite a “fog of war” as this excerpt hand-waves around any damage being done. How many tankers loaded with oil have been sunk? How many deaths? The US has stopped unloaded Iranian ships, I believe.
There is a real stink about all of the propaganda on this. The oil companies don’t want to deliver - is the truth, I believe. They like the high prices, and Iran provides a good enough excuse.
“The oil companies don’t want to deliver - is the truth, I believe. They like the high prices, and Iran provides a good enough excuse.”
Bingo that is the main reason, along with trying to rig the mid-terms.
Did you look him up on wiki? No. I said his bona fides go for three pages
You don’t even know the first thing about the military people running this war
