An off-the-charts Super El Niño that’s expected to peak this winter could be oddly good for New York City — while other parts of the US may be slammed by storms and flooding, forecasters said Thursday.
The “behemoth” weather system — measured by sea surface temperatures — could rise to more than six times that of a typical El Niño between November and January, according to the World Meteorological Organization.
“This is literally off the monitoring charts that we have used for the past four decades,” Celeste Saulo, secretary of the WMO, said Wednesday.
In the Big Apple, it could make weather feel like autumn into January — with up to a quarter less snow forecast this winter than last, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Matt Benz told The Post.
“Fall will linger longer this year,” Benz said. “We expect winter to arrive later.”
“In the middle to end of January, we will start to get taste of winter in the Tri-State area,” he said.
While a brutal 43 inches of snow fell last year in New York City, only 10 to 20 inches are forecast this year, he said.
Much of the Northeastern US is also expected to have a mild winter due to the weather system.

We, in AZ are looking forward!
El Nino is the year to fill our dams with much needed water.
It may stop this drought we are experiencing lately.
Let us hope!
How is a quarter less snow, likely for Upstate, too, good news for NYC’s resevoirs?
Here in Atlantic Kanuckistan, a mild winter will go down good.
Does this mean I can stop my processing firewood?
From earlier this month...
I thought we had 4.37 years left. Silly me. Always trying to keep my chin up.
Is there a mRNA vaccine for an El Niño?

With billions in satellites, radar, weather stations, planes, etc., you would think they would get at least 50%, but they have a long way to go to get my trust.
BS!
“Meteorologist. The only occupation where you can be wrong 100% of the time and still have a job.”
Almost, but not quite the only occupation-economist comes to mind ;)
If the weatherman says it’s raining, call in the dog and see if he’s wet!

“When you play in New England, you have to be ready for everything. I’d say based on the forecasts we’ve gotten so far this year, none of them have been even very close to what game conditions were.
There was 100 percent chance of rain last week and the only water I saw was on the Gatorade table.
You know, it is what it is.
You know as well as I do, it could start one way and change during the game. we have to be ready for whatever it is, but my experience of going with the forecast in this area two days before the game, I mean I’d bet a lot that they’re wrong, just based on history because they’re almost always wrong. An hour before the game, maybe. You might have something to work with there.
I think if you start game planning for what the weather is going to be and you game plan wrong, you’ve wasted a lot of time. The forecasts are a bunch of hot air. Look, I’m not saying I could do it better than them, I’m just saying they’re wrong a lot.
That’s a fact. They’re wrong a lot.
We all make mistakes. I’m not being critical of them, I’m just saying I don’t think you can go based on that.”
There’s no mRNA vax yet. We’ll have to rely on more taxes to fix it.
EC
you have hit on the big story.
the lake levels are rising! (except for lake meade) but lake powell is up 5 feet from its historic lows.
Well, I guess that means I need to hurry up and make sure my snow blower and generator are in good working order.
Or.. it could not
