Luna, the 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier from California who was lost in Yellowstone National Park since early September, has been reunited with her owner and is going home. Rescuers caught the dog Wednesday after she managed to survive the cold, feed herself and avoid coyotes in the wilderness for more than a month.
“The dog that was loose in the Canyon Village area has been captured and is alive and well,” Yellowstone National Park spokesperson Linda Veress confirmed to SFGATE.
At a veterinarian’s office Wednesday with Luna and the dog’s owner, rescuer Katie Boucher gave SFGATE an update on Luna’s condition and provided some details about how the rescue went down.
“We just know she’s skinny,” said Boucher, president of Norris Ark Training and Recovery Center, a nonprofit animal rescue in Norris, Montana. Luna has lost approximately half of her body weight, going from about 20 pounds to a little over 10 pounds.
After more than a month of trying to capture Luna, Boucher finally received a promising update from a park employee on Tuesday: Luna had been circling the trap set up for her — a doghouse with a straw-and-grass bed inside — and lying down near it. “I wanted to make sure she had some place that had something dry in it that she could shelter in,” Boucher said. When she found out the dog had been getting comfortable near the trap, she felt confident the rescue would happen within a couple of days.

Sent to a pound?????
According to the defense lawyer on behalf of the ASPCA case underway.
Jack Russell Terrorists are tough hombres.
Yellowstone coyotes should be embarrassed.
“”Sent to a pound?????””
I’m guessing no proof reading before posting...
No one considers those coyotes to be Super Geniuses.
If our Jack Russell Terriorist got loose she would be very hard to catch. The coyotes probably gave her a pass.
Nice ending but the dog should have been in a crate. The owners shouldn’t assume the workers can understand English.
Only issue is dog forgot English, only knows Pashtu.
In the 60’s or early 70’s, Disney would have made a movie based on this story.
The cat got left behind as well, but just went to the nearest house and meowed at the door. New home.
I'm so old I remember when Disney wasn't creepy.
has been reunited with her owner and is going home.
Home....to California.
Gees, the dog just can’t catch a break.
Sad, I hate it when a good dog gets pound.
Luckily, it was a Jack Russell terrier, so it was able to survive on bear meat. /s
“We’re very relieved that Luna has been found,” said Todd Walton, the director of marketing and sales at Yellowstone National Park Lodges. “We want to give a big congratulations to everybody that was involved in working to get her home.” But Walton noted that pets aren’t allowed to be left alone in any of the rooms, per hotel policy, so staff weren’t expecting any animals inside when they came to deliver fresh towels the family had requested. “It’s a really unfortunate thing all the way around,” he said. “It was an accident.”
