Massive 28-foot statue of biblical pharaoh who enslaved Israelites unearthed — by accident

It was a real head of state.

An Egyptian farmer allegedly struck gold after inadvertently coming upon the remains of a royal statue of Ramses II — the pharaoh who allegedly challenged Moses in the Bible.

The watershed discovery was set in motion after a villager reportedly uncovered a carved stone block while tilling the land in front of his home in Behbeit El Hagar, in Gharbia province, the Egyptian Gazette reported.

He reportedly flagged the local antiquities officials, after which a team working for the Supreme Council of Antiquities launched an excavation, according to Heritage Daily.

What they exhumed blew their minds.

The treasure trove reportedly includes an over 5-foot-tall head of Ramses II that’s depicted sporting the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt.

Judging by the size of the noggin, archaeologists projected that the entire statue measured over 27 feet tall, including the base.

Archaeologists also unearthed a second, smaller royal statue that measured just under eight feet tall.

While the figure’s legs and base were missing, its face was clearly visible and bordered by nemes, the striped royal headdress worn by ancient Egyptian pharaohs.

These characteristics, along with the fact that the visage resembled the other statue, suggested that it was also a Ramses II facsimile.

Also uncovered was a 4-foot-high block of pink granite containing fragments of hieroglyphic inscriptions proclaiming the pharaoh “Nesu Beti”, meaning King of Upper and Lower Egypt, and “Sa Ra”, meaning Son of Ra.

Born in 1303 BC, Ramses II is widely considered one of the most influential and powerful Egyptian kings of Egypt’s New Kingdom era (1570 to circa 1069 B.C.).

The ruler is also popularly linked to the story of Moses in the biblical Book of Exodus, even though the holy text doesn’t mention him by name.

Yul Brynner notwithstanding, Ramesses II is unlikely to have been the pharaoh of the Exodus. He’s still an important dude of course

Who was? Or are the Egyptologists still switching the dates from time to time?

And did the farmer get compensated for the find? Or did the Big Daddy Supreme Council just swoop in with Zahi Hawass and take it, and give the farmer an ‘attaboy’?

Amenhotep II is the most likely, as his predecessor Thutmose III ruled for over 40 years and his firstborn son did not succeed him, fitting the first born narrative.

There’s a special edifice in front of the sphinx trying to justify the next pharaoh as legitimate, indicating much upheaval.

Some historians and theologians say that it was Ramses II. indeed, because of the mentioning of the two cities of Pitom and Ramses, where the Children of Israel were used as workers.

However, Ramses II. cannot have perished in the Red Sea, as his body would certainly have been lost. But his mummy is still extant - it’s in the Valley of the Kings in his grave.

For a while, the dead Pharaoh had been on display in the National Museum in Cairo, but in 1981, shortly before his assassination, President Sadat ordered the transfer of Ramses II back to his grave.

In Sadat‘s opinion, it was disgraceful to bereave the dead Pharaoh of his last dignity by keeping his corpse displayed in a museum, like a work of art, forgetting that he once was a living, thinking and feeling human being.

Another matter is that the Exodus from Egypt most likely took place around the year 1470 BC, and that was roughly two hundred years before Ramses‘ II. rule. Ramses II. was probably born around 1300 BC.

Interesting find, even though Moses had been dead for centuries when Ramses II was born.

When I saw the headline on this article, I thought maybe a giant statue of a pharaoh from the Second Intermediate Period had been found, like one of the Sobekhoteps. Instead, it’s Ramses II again. Some Egyptologists won’t quit looking for evidence that he’s the Pharaoh of the Exodus.

I saw the royal mummies in the old Cairo Museum, when I visited Egypt in 1979. However, Ramses II was not there. His body had gone to Paris to be treated for a fungus infection (that’s why he looks green or blue in photos taken during the 1960s and 1970s), and the Egyptologists were keeping an eye on him to make sure the X-rays applied to the mummy had worked. I also remember Anwar Sadat ordering that Ramses not be on display, but I do not believe he ever went back to the Valley of the Kings. However, his grandfather, Ramses I, is near the valley, in a museum dedicated to ancient Egypt’s military history, because he was a general before he became pharaoh.

As far as I know, Ramses II was among the royal mummies transferred from the old Cairo Museum to one of the new museums in 2021. You may remember the grand parade staged when that happened.
