Many of us have them in our homes and at offices — but a neuroscientist warns that one household staple may be a major threat to our health.
Glen Jeffery, a professor of neuroscience at University College London, is sounding the alarm about what he calls a “clear and present public health emergency” that no one seems to be talking about.
He has gone so far as to compare the item to asbestos — once widely used in building materials before people realized it can cause issues like mesothelioma and lung cancer.
The health threat? Energy-efficient light-emitting diode bulbs, which are present in schools, offices, hospitals and nearly half of US households — and which Jeffrey claims could raise the risk of diabetes and other metabolic disorders.
“LED lighting is damaging mitochondria and therefore there is no question you’re damaging systemic health,” Jeffrey told The European. “This is a clear and present public health emergency and we need to take action.”
One study found that daily exposure to short-wavelength blue light reduced measures of mitochondrial activity by about 50% in mice. Another study found that exposure to blue-enriched LED lighting altered activity, metabolism and liver function in mice.

Actually, you can buy almost every type of incandescent light bulbs from Amazon, when Obama and then Biden banned them, I started ordering them. They are far less expensive, have a beautiful soft tone rather than the green or blue glare that distorts color like LEDS.
Read the post, your cliche response doesn’t fit, it is our light bulbs and flashlights and lanterns we are talking about.
I like the advancements and find a lot of benefit from them.
I always made sure that I had a 100 watt bulb to read by but they were so hot during the summer, now I use 100 watt equivalent bulbs, cool white, which makes the print clearer than incandescent, and I use a few 300 watt equivalents to really light up my place, I like that they don’t heat up the house and they last for so many years, I have yet to learn how many years they will last.

The typical “warm” light is 2700 to 3000 K and “cold” (or blue light) is about 5000 K. color temperature.
The sun, at midday is 5500 to 6000 K color temperature.
Therefore, if we spend any time in the sun, I suppose we are all doomed. /S

I’ll worry about it if the warning comes from a credible source. Some rando limey college professor isn’t a credible source. I love the LEDs - I used to replace bulbs all the time, now it’s a rare event. I’m getting too old to stand on ladders.
