Many of us have them in our homes and at offices — but a neuroscientist warns that one household staple may be a major threat to our health.
Glen Jeffery, a professor of neuroscience at University College London, is sounding the alarm about what he calls a “clear and present public health emergency” that no one seems to be talking about.
He has gone so far as to compare the item to asbestos — once widely used in building materials before people realized it can cause issues like mesothelioma and lung cancer.
The health threat? Energy-efficient light-emitting diode bulbs, which are present in schools, offices, hospitals and nearly half of US households — and which Jeffrey claims could raise the risk of diabetes and other metabolic disorders.
“LED lighting is damaging mitochondria and therefore there is no question you’re damaging systemic health,” Jeffrey told The European. “This is a clear and present public health emergency and we need to take action.”
One study found that daily exposure to short-wavelength blue light reduced measures of mitochondrial activity by about 50% in mice. Another study found that exposure to blue-enriched LED lighting altered activity, metabolism and liver function in mice.

How many years are left?
LEDs never had mercury.
That was the fluorescent light bulb you are thinking of.
Incandescents are garbage, ugly light, hot, expensive to use, fragile, short lived.
Most people in the old days used 60 watt bulbs, which looks dark now.
Yep you can buy “warm light” LED bulbs...same spectrum as incandescents. #1 source of shorter wavelength “blue” light is smart phone & tablet screens...ban ‘em! ;-)

Wasn’t it the curly-q fluorescent bulbs that were all the rage 40 years ago to save energy the ones with a bit of mercury? I don’t think LED bulbs ever had any Hg in them.

Truly can’t stand those energy efficient bulbs.
I stocked up with ‘normal’ bulbs’ the 2 times when Obama and Biden banned them.
Lol, I think there was a little more to the advancements in lighting than that, they do a lot for my home and workshop, and even outdoors and flashlights and lanterns.
They are safer than toxic twisties, which in addition to the danger from mercury, are a fire hazard.

We stocked up on incandescents, as well. El Rushbo warned everyone to. I think he said he had storage rooms full of ‘em.
We still get them pretty cheap ... rough service bulbs are still incandescent.
