Many of us have them in our homes and at offices — but a neuroscientist warns that one household staple may be a major threat to our health.
Glen Jeffery, a professor of neuroscience at University College London, is sounding the alarm about what he calls a “clear and present public health emergency” that no one seems to be talking about.
He has gone so far as to compare the item to asbestos — once widely used in building materials before people realized it can cause issues like mesothelioma and lung cancer.
The health threat? Energy-efficient light-emitting diode bulbs, which are present in schools, offices, hospitals and nearly half of US households — and which Jeffrey claims could raise the risk of diabetes and other metabolic disorders.
“LED lighting is damaging mitochondria and therefore there is no question you’re damaging systemic health,” Jeffrey told The European. “This is a clear and present public health emergency and we need to take action.”
One study found that daily exposure to short-wavelength blue light reduced measures of mitochondrial activity by about 50% in mice. Another study found that exposure to blue-enriched LED lighting altered activity, metabolism and liver function in mice.

where are you finding 100W incadescents?
On our storage shelves :)
We have multi wattages ... some older (pre-0bama’s ban), some new.
the problem with warm LEDs of all types is that they have the spectrum however the red portion is truncated and that is a problem for the brain.
yes, they were the reason we lost effective glass thermometers.
you assume the heat isn’t wanted. Here in snow country the heat is welcome.
I cannot find more 100W rough service.
that is what I need more of.
OK, many LED bulbs are single color temp. If you specifically purchase multi-color temp bulbs you are likely paying more for them than if you just pick the color temp you want in a single color temp bulb. I have yet to purchase a multi-color temp bulb because of the significantly higher price point and the extra electronics required to make them, which also have a higher likelihood of a failure (especially if foreign made with junk/recycled/knock-off electronics).
You can have what you want. Just give the rest of us choice.
Do a search ... several 100w rough service bulbs come up.
Just found them they were not available last time I looked.
Glad you found some!
There is and I hate that orange looking screen turning off blue light.
Blue is beautiful and natural looking. I’m keeping it.
“”””””you assume the heat isn’t wanted. Here in snow country the heat is welcome.””””””
I have a brother who always says that, 100 watts of heat at the center of the ceiling doesn’t help much, but a 16x23”, 150 watt wall panel facing me under my desk does wonders and is incredibly efficient, so is a 16x36” 70 watt floor mat under my feet at the desk.
There are many variations of low wattage heaters that put the electricity where it does some good, and they can be put away when spring and summer comes.
Is that the twirly looking kind they tried to force us into using?
