Seems to me we tried that sort of thing before in the middle east, in various ways. Such as propping up Afghanistan to defy the Soviets (which pretty much worked but ended up backfiring on us) or propping up Saddam to counter Iran (mostly worked but ended up backfiring on us.)

Pakistan would seem to have the upper hand. The Afghans are a backward people.
The real question: Who do we root for?
