For most people of a political bent, the big takeaway from Jake Tapper's interview of Gavin Newsom while engaged in performative fly fishing together in Montana which was aired by CNN on Monday was Newsom's pledge to not run for president in 2028 if fellow Californian Kamala Harris decides to once again throw her hat into the presidential race. However, wildlife experts focused in on the inadvertent comedy entertainment provided by the cosplaying fly fishermen.
You can get a sense of just how hilarious such outdoorsmen found the duo by reading the opinions of a couple of them in Wyoming's Cowboy State Daily. I’d wager that 85-90% of voters have no idea how absurd and insulting this whole promo piece was, not unlike Shumer’s “Look at me! I’m Just Like You! Really!!!” grilling stunt with a slice of cheese on raw hamburger.

That’s okay. As much as I hate to agree with anyone from the NY times, CJ Box is right. They do not know how to cast a fly.

So like Tim Walz’s pheasant hunt where Tampon Tim dressed like Elmer Fudd and didn’t know how to load his shotgun. Liberals think they can attract the votes of blue collar types by these staged outdoor hunting and fishing events but end up looking like fools. Does anyone remember the Kamala Harris political ad showing actors trying to be real blue collar types based on liberal stereotypes of blue collar men?

Newsom is taking the “Aw Shucks, I’m a regular dude” path that Walz tried - I doubt Newsom has fished a single day in his life, might mess up his hair.
Like Walz, this is a photo op for Newsom’s run for president to appeal to the “great flyover country” - of which Newsom has great disdain - but needs their votes.
He’s “testing the waters” right now to see if Kamala is going to run - if not, he’ll run. I’m sure he’s seen the internal numbers that show he has no chance against Kamala Harris - who would be a Biden-tier disaster as POTUS.
It was ridiculous theatre.
