Russian spies orchestrated $40K murder plot in nation’s capital, US alleges

The US accused Russian intelligence operatives of orchestrating a murder-for-hire plot targeting a Kremlin critic believed to be living in Washington, DC.

In documents unsealed on Tuesday, federal prosecutors claim the conspiracy was part of a broader global network that recruited people to carry out assassinations and terrorist attacks on behalf of Moscow.

The five men charged in the incitement allegedly worked for Russia’s intelligence services, and are accused of being paid and attempting to pay others in the US and abroad to surveil and kill Russian dissidents.

Three of the defendants also face conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire charges. All five defendants remain at large, according to the Justice Department.

According to prosecutors, the alleged operation reached the nation’s capital in late August, when suspected Russian intelligence operatives directed a US-based Venezuelan citizen to secretly film two Washington-area locations tied to a Kremlin critic before allegedly offering him $40,000 to carry out the killing.

The recruit completed the surveillance but refused to commit the murder himself, according to the indictment.

Prosecutors allege the five defendants were members or associates of a Russian intelligence-directed network that financed terrorism and coordinated violent operations across multiple countries.

The recruiter walked the operative through the surveillance step by step, prosecutors say, and allegedly instructed him to put his phone in airplane mode, begin recording before entering the neighborhood, slow as he passed the target’s home and delete the messages afterward.

Ping.

This is the sort of dirty doings that intelligence agencies are involved in.

They aren't boy scouts.

They’re probably just collecting information on how we monitor them.

One might think the Russians would be a little smarter than this.

Spying by everyone on everyone else - ok, that’s a given.

But, in Trump, while he’s not the Kremlin tool so many on the left accuse him of being, Trump is at least willing to give Russia’s side of the story a listen, act as an arbitrator or conduit between Ukraine and Russia, pressure Ukraine, etc. Which IMO is a lot more than the Russian regime deserves, but that’s not my point.

The point is, they do have that much, and then the Russians risk it with silly schemes like this, that cannot possibly have any net positive effect anyway?

These people may have opossum-like cunning in some sense, but they overall have about the same intelligence. And that is being generous.

Four hours. Different headline from a different source with much more information.

I did not write the FR rules. Learn ‘em, love ‘em, live ‘em.

Well, let’s see - this article is from a different, MUCH larger audience source (Fox is 18x larger than Mediaite, not even counting Fox’s cable and radio audiences), with considerably more capacity to source info. and verify it, it is a longer article with significant added info. and background provided in this case — shall I continue?

Besides, at this point FR needs as many legit thread postings as possible, so long as they are not exact duplicates.

You just don’t like certain realities, like the Russian regime’s ingrained behavior being exposed. Maybe stick with F1 and choppers.

I’d say someone just didn’t like certain facts being exposed...

If they would have consulted a seasoned professional with long experience in these matters they wouldn't have gotten caught.
