Sydney Sweeney is doing what Sydney Sweeney does.
She is hot and she knows it. She is using her hotness to sell something. The something happens to be Novig, a sports betting app.
So she’s holding footballs.
She is not pretending to be an athlete; she is being a woman men like to look at.
That is the entire point of the ad.
Predictably, a posse of female athletes is furious.
Former UCLA gymnast Gracie Kramer posted a training montage: “idk what Sydney Sweeney was doing, but this is what a woman in sports looks like.”
Sydney isn’t claiming to be an athlete — she’s just being hot while holding sports balls.
Kramer said female athletes have been over-sexualized and forced to fight to be taken seriously.
Female gymnasts are taken seriously: Gymnastics may be the only sport on Earth where the women are taken more seriously than the men.
Kramer claimed the ad proves women’s sports are “marketed through the male gaze.”
But Novig isn’t marketing women’s sports: It’s marketing a betting app for men.
“We should not have to take our clothes off to convince men that women belong in sports,” Kramer lectured.

Today’s manufactured outrage is the quarterback who laughed at the AI video of the reporter getting slapped by the coach. Both of these controversies are stupid.
But you do it for every track, field, figure-skating, gymnastics, and beach volleyball event. You're not required to do it, so where's the beef?

We went to beach volleyball at the ‘96 Olympics.
I enjoyed it! Besides attractive women playing, we were sitting near a big section of Brazilians. They were a HOOT, having a great time, fun to watch.

I don’t know what gymnast Gracie Kramer is doing but Sydney Sweeney is making a ton of money looking fantastic. Maybe Sydney isn’t a great gymnast but Gracie isn’t a great actor or model. Not everybody can everything.
