Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin claimed on Thursday that Somali-born Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) "married her brother" as part of an alleged immigration fraud scheme, adding that she could now face deportation. Mullin made the remarks while speaking with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson at the GOP midterm convention in Dallas.
During the conversation, he discussed the federal investigation into the "Squad" congresswoman, describing the probe as ongoing. "We know that she married her brother to try to bring him into the United States," Mullin said of the Minnesota Democrat. "We know he lives now in London." He was referring to the second man Omar married. Both were born in Somalia.
Dirty Scheme Exposed
The man was identified by the Daily Mail in an earlier report as Ahmed Elmi. Mullin said the investigation could potentially uncover "illegal activity" involving Omar, which could ultimately lead to her deportation from the United States. "There may be more to this, the whole family migration and possibly some illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with," he told Johnson.
At the same time, Mullin stressed that the investigation has not been completed and insisted that any action taken would not be driven by politics.
"Here's what I want to make sure we do: if we actually move a case forward, it's not a political case, it's an actual case, because they did things wrong," he said.
He further explained that immigration violations could still have consequences years later.
"If you lied about certain things about your application. There's no expiration to that. If we can prove it – that you shouldn't have been here in the first place – we'll deport you," Mullin added.
