A short video of the problem. The hood on larger Mercedes EQ models (like the EQE and EQS) is not designed to be opened by owners and is restricted to certified technicians.

Comment at site: It's not only car companies pulling this. There are quite a few companies these days moving into the "you bought it but don't own it" business model.

“Right to Repair” is a huge issue for a lot of stuff.

I like to build my own computers. If something breaks, or if I want an upgrade, I just open it up and do what needs to be done. That’s fine for a PC but less good for Apple products.

Cars, TVs, lot of other stuff. Once upon a time, young people just grew up learning how to fix things. Nowadays, it’s almost illegal.

Absolutely unbelievable. You pay that much for that type of car and they do that? Oh man...it would not be a pleasant visit about that. Oh, never mind.

I bought a used Nissan truck with a good six cylinder engine I went to check the transmission fluid and I can’t. Apparently you go to a mechanic to get your transmission fluid checked, what a bunch of BS.

It is an EV, oversized electric golf cart, right?

I doubt, like most EV buyers, they have the slightest clue what they would be looking at.

I will not buy a Mercedes if I can’t open the hood.
I prefer keeping an eye on oil level, coolant level, break fluid level, myself.

I looked into the Zero electric motorcycles. Pretty pricey and they have a nasty marketing scheme. You get all the hardware when you purchase the bike, but there is a long list of software "subscriptions" they want a monthly fee to enable. No pay, no feature. Too shady for me. I decided against a purchase.

IIRC the Nissan has an overflow plug on the side...

My son bought a VW diesel with the DSG trans made to use a special scan tool, third-party vendor software $100+ and you need a Windows laptop.

OR, VW DSG units do not have a standard dipstick. Instead, the transmission pan uses an internal standpipe (overflow snorkel). The correct level is verified by removing the outer drain plug while the vehicle is completely level and the fluid is at 35°C–45°C

His dealer wanted $500 for a fluid change at 40,000 miles.
At that time, diesel was cheap, and the transmission change was about equal to the cost of fuel used for 40K miles.

We did it in my garage...

Most Euro trash cars do not have dipsticks for the engine oil either. “Computer” tells you what level it is.

—”My X-wife had some of those ML suv”

Some years back, I had the hots for an ML400 and was ready to sign...

Until I mentioned it to a gearhead I worked with.
His tale of woe was riding in the backseat for less than 100 miles. After extensive therapy, his back had mostly recovered.

So we bought a Ford Expedition, a great car until I went to change the cursed two-piece spark plugs, an ALLDAY project with luck; sometimes you only take out the top half of the plug!!!
A friend had the special tool and left it on his back porch in case I needed it.
Ford had a better IDEA!
