At least five people are dead and five others are injured after an Amazon Prime Air plane, a Boeing 767, crashed at Miami International Airport due to overshooting the runway upon landing.

The cargo plane overran Runway 30, struck multiple vehicles, and came to rest at a field next to the airport.

“21 Air Flight 7598 overran the runway after landing at Miami International Airport around 2 p.m. local time on Sunday, Sept. 6. The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The FAA will investigate,” the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement.

"Prime Air Flight 7598 overran Miami International Airport’s diagonal runway at approximately 2 p.m. today, leaving the aircraft disabled at the northwest end of the airport. All MIA runways and taxiways are currently closed, and a full ground stop is in effect," Miami International Airport stated.

"Passengers with flights scheduled today should check directly with their airline for flight status updates before heading to the airport," it added.

NBC News shared further:

Three people were in critical condition and were taken to a trauma center, and two others were taken to a local hospital, Miami-Dade Fire Chief Raied Jadallah said.

A hotline has been set up for relatives of people who may have been involved in the accident. The scene remains active.

Video showed plumes of smoke billowing from the wreckage. The plane, Jadallah said, struck “a couple of vehicles.”

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the flight was operated by 21 Air and was coming in to land when the incident occurred.

“We’re heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives in today’s incident at Miami International Airport. Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this devastating loss,” Nantel said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) said the plane hit several vehicles near the 2100 block of Northwest 42nd Avenue, and more than 60 of its units were responding. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office said it is also responding.

MDFR said when the crews arrived, they found the plane with heavy smoke and flames showing had stopped beyond the airport's operational boundary. Using foam and specialized airport firefighting units, MDFR crews fought to extinguish the fire. Crews also conducted search and rescue operations for the pilots and co-pilots inside the cockpit while locating and assessing patients throughout the scene, MDFR said.

One person was trapped under an involved vehicle and was extricated by specialized MDFR technical rescue personnel, officials said.

Irresponsible journalism.

#1, Overshooting a runway is different from overrunning it. Overshooting means they landed too too far down the runway. Nothing I have seen or read thus far indicates they might have overshot the runway.

#2, The video did NOT show "plumes of smoke billowing from the wreckage." It showed smoke and flames billowing NEAR the wreckage but the side facing the camera WAS NOT burning. From that camera angle it cannot be known whether it was coming FROM the wreckage.

This is the side not shown in the video. You can see structural damage to the leading edge of the right wing near the wing root but there are trucks blocking the view of the outboard section of the wing.

The source of the fire could have been something on the ground the wing struck (like a tesla, ... cough, cough), or it could have been leaking flammable fluids that ran away from the plane and caught fire without involving the plane itself.

Photos and videos of the wreckage had already been online for some time before the fire broke out, which gives me to believe it wasn't the plane that was on fire.

That's pure speculation but so is the claim that the plume of smoke was coming from the airplane.

This week, on Tubi or similar, Hubby found a string of documentaries about airplane incidents and disasters. They played the audio from the black boxes when it was available.

One was about a pilot whose English was so bad that he was hearing and saying the exact opposite of what was true. I don’t remember how many people died in that crash.

Another reason to avoid flying whenever possible. (And it’s always possible.)

Since this was an overran and not an overshoot..

Immediate questions are

Was the plane overloaded

Was the cargo secured, did it shift

Was there a mechanical failure.

Is it possible the pilot made a mistake? Yes, but given this wasn’t an overshoot, but an over ran, my first assumptions would be if human error it wasn’t the pilot failed to break. (Though it is possible)

But I heard nothing about asking for a longer runway or a go-around.

Your best bet is with Middle Eastern or Asian carriers. They are not undergoing High Subversion and will have competent pilots, crew and procedures. The West is currently experiencing Subversion Level 5, the highest.
