Whats the fat percentage? I pay more but get 90% or 93% meat, not 80% or 73% meat.

I heard that the US cattle herd is at a 75 year low.

Yes, I saw that figure on the USDA website recently, and it was widely reported on TV stations around here on their farm shows. Ongoing drought in the Western US is widely cited.

We are seeing more and more cattle operations around here, likely because there is no water shortage even in "dry" years. (This year has been exceptionally wet, especially this summer. Many locations have set records.)

As a rancher, the price on hoof went up considerably in 2025 and has stabilized.

The cause is simply there are less cows/steers going to market. Supply was less and demand was steady. So price went up.

The reason there are less cattle is the rain has been way down so we sold off a lot in 2024. We’re in a drought cycle and you have to spread out the animals and you need cows to grow the herd.

It has zero to do with world events and everything to do with weather.

It is.

Rainfall has sucked.

It’s that simple.

I think you did better than that. 24x10 is 240 ounces, divide by 16 ounces per pound, and thats 15 pounds of beef. 30 dollars divided by 15 pounds is $2 per pound.

I just got 24 10 oz patties of ground Angus beef at $29.99 which came out to $3.75/lb. Sometimes you just have to LOOK for the deals.

Oops! I'm cooped up with a really bad cold so belay the above cost. I was thinking of the price of roast beef I got at the same discount store recently. As to the ground Angus beef, it actually came out even LOWER, $2.00 per pound. Like I said above you have to LOOK for the really good deals.

“the happiness margin” — chuckle!!

I remember in the 50s growing up our special steak treat on the BBQ. That was way back before Weber and Green Egg — just a simple BBQ grill. Dad was a good BBQ chef.

Seems like it’s still a special treat.

We braised some beef short ribs yesterday and turned out pretty Bleah!

Between the dry years that hurt feed supplies as well, and also flooding other years, we lots a lot of cattle and pigs the last 5-10 years. And dont forget the massive fires at chicken raising facilities and the extreme cullings they did if there was any bird flu junk around.

You're right. I was thinking about the price of roast beef I got at the same store namely 8 pounds for $39.99 or $3.75/lb. The ground Angus beef which was of EXCELLENT quality was only $2.00/lb.

I got hit with a bad cold today which has sort of affected my thought process.

How can you raise cattle out in that arid land?

Prices are increasing. You can mock liberals all you want but the 'affordability crisis' as they call it is real.

It started with Biden and Covid but has continued under Trump.

Democrat Socialists are using it to their advantage while Republicans don't want to acknowledge it. Advantage Democrat Socialists.

Im not accusing anyone here of this, just pointing this out:

Hubby and I pay much less than the prices mentioned here. We buy from a local farmer and processor. And we pay per pound hanging weight.
