Burger King redid their Whopper and changed the entire burger game…

Burger King may have stumbled onto a revolutionary new strategy for saving a struggling fast-food chain:

Make the food better.

Gee, wild concept, right?

It’s been a long road for the meat royalty. Burger King was losing ground quickly while McDonald’s dominated the burger wars and Wendy’s was elbowing its way into second place. Burger King’s restaurants were outdated, franchisees were struggling, locations were closing, and some of the chain’s menu experiments were making a disaster.

So Burger King finally went back to the thing that made it Burger King in the first place.

The Whopper.

And they didn’t just slap another slice of bacon on it, give it some ridiculous limited-edition sauce, and call it innovation. Burger King actually did the real hard work. They quietly started rebuilding its signature burger from the bun up (and down), including new ingredients, better packaging, and one very interesting hire.

They brought in the chef who helped create the Popeyes chicken sandwich that practically caused a national fast-food frenzy back in 2019.

Turns out, this chef had another hit up her apron.

Burger King put US Head Chef Amy Alarcon in charge of the Whopper overhaul, and the changes sound comically simple.

Better bun. New mayo. Better packaging.

That’s it.

But when you’re selling millions of burgers, these little improvements can make a huge difference, especially when the person making the changes already knows a thing or two about creating fast-food mania.

The Wall Street Journal:

To overhaul its signature Whopper, Burger King added a more premium bun, new mayonnaise, a box to preserve freshness—and a corporate chef who had already worked magic at chicken chain Popeyes.

Overseen by Burger King’s U.S. Head Chef Amy Alarcon, who developed the Popeyes chicken sandwich that became a viral sensation in 2019, the revamped Whopper is now helping propel a comeback for the chain. Burger King has lately been drawing diners at a swifter rate than both McDonald’s and Wendy’s, and its restaurant sales are growing faster.

Burger King didn’t reinvent itself by abandoning the Whopper. It made the Whopper better.

There’s a lesson in here for places like Cracker Barrel and Bud Light, two companies that spent millions of dollars chasing a goofy trend.

And the numbers are already looking good for BK.

WSJ:

Earlier this month Burger King reported an 8.5% increase in U.S. same-store sales over its most recent quarter, beating McDonald’s results by the largest margin in at least two years. Wendy’s U.S. same-store sales declined by 7%.

Burger King topped both of its main rivals in visit growth in July, according to Placer.ai, which analyzes foot traffic. Burger King has reclaimed the No. 2 spot among U.S. burger chains, bumping aside Wendy’s in terms of U.S. sales over the 12 months ended June 30, company filings show.

Those numbers show that customers are actually walking back through Burger King’s doors.

And Burger King has now snatched the number-two US burger spot back from Wendy’s.

Simple food. Simple deal. Consistency.

Apparently that still works… who knew?

WSJ:

Burger King last year standardized a menu of two items for $5, or three for $7. Curtis said that the deal’s consistency has made it easy for customers to remember.

The chain’s menu and service need more improvement, Curtis said, but he is hearing promising signs in his chats with customers. “It’s consistent value and commitment to your premium Whopper lineup that makes the difference here,” he said.

It’s simple, really. Give people something good, charge them a price they agree with, and make sure they get the same experience every time.

While we love a “comeback” story, BK hasn’t fixed everything. Their president admits there’s more work to do, and McDonald’s is still the Godzilla of American burgers.

But Burger King has something it hasn’t had in a while… momentum.

There’s something really refreshing about a company discovering that the answer to its problems was just higher-quality food.

Burger King took its most famous burger and made it better… and customers noticed.

Hey, King, here’s your crown back. 👑

About 60 years ago, BK came to my hometown. They were great. Got a burger at one here in Oklahoma last year. The meat was cold. And why wouldn’t it be? Afaik, their burgers are precooked, then run through a flamer. Last week, went past that location; it is now a Whataburger.

New mayo... ???

And that’s their problem. Mayo doesn’t go on a burger. The only true burger ingredients are cheese, mustard, ketchup, onions, pickles... And maybe relish.

You may add bacon if you must, but bacon is better on it’s own... It makes your burger tastes like... Bacon. If I want bacon I eat breakfast.

I had a whopper in the airport in Osaka a couple of weeks ago and it was shockingly good. Maybe they just care more in Japan, or maybe it was this “rework”.

Toward the end of the article “Curtis” remarks on the $5 and $7 Dollar Menus. Who is “Curtis”?

Will Burger King bring that Smiling King statue back?
A lot have called him Creepy looking, but I always thought he was a fun cartoon. Like something you would see marching in a Thanksgiving Day parade, frantically waving to and fro.

I wonder how much Burger King paid them to run this slobbering piece of garbage article?

All our Burger Kings went out of business over a year ago when the local franchisee went bankrupt.

We lost 5 stores in Ft. Walton Beach, Destin and Niceville.

Probably more in Pensacola and Panama City, I don’t know.

They also had the Hardees franchise and that’s gone now as well.

But we still have McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Whataburger, Sonic, Five Guys, Chic-fil-A, KFC, Popeyes, Zaxby’s and Slim Chickens............

Funny as I always ordered my Whoppers w/o the mayo...

Lately, I get a “trio” of W! Jrs.

Hopefully they will be using the new and improved mayo on those.

Way back in the 60's the Burger King was a cartoon character.

Some locations they hired really sketchy people. Surly and .... not what I’m looking for in wait staff. “What did they put in my food, I wonder” is not a recipe for success, for a restaurant.

This goes back to poor management, and they probably don’t pay enough either. They can’t recruit or retain quality people. People just phone it in without good supervision, and it shows up in the quality and presentation of the food. This isn’t gourmet food, but it still makes a huge difference.

Hmmm...
I notice there is nothing about using real beef, as they redo their gristleburgers...

At our local Indian Casino brewery they have a menu and for the burgers I always order the Classic with Cheese and Bacon. It has a small amount of aole (sic) sauce, but otherwise I have it clean. Just the meat, cheese, lettuce tomato and onion. The burger is flame grilled or what ever..it has that nice grilled taste and is about a half pound burger easy. It always tastes great. The bun is nice, soft and chewy, which is good. Can’t go wrong with their burgers. With it, beer batter fries, (which I can’t eat)—around $18—I usually substitute the fries for a fruit cup, or cup of soup or a small salad for the same price or a couple of dollars more..its worth it...

Tom Curtis serves as the President of Burger King U.S. & Canada, overseeing the brand’s operations in those regions and acting as the public face of the U.S. division.
