A Texas high school teacher was reduced to tears and broke down in front of his class when he realized the seniors he was teaching couldn’t complete a writing exercise.
Darius Williams, a teacher for Houston Independent School District’s Wheatley High School, said he couldn’t get through the first class of the second day of school before his students’ poor literacy skills were too much for him.
“I just finished a three-hour class, and I literally broke down in the middle of class,” Williams said in an Instagram video during his lunch break on Tuesday. Williams, a New Education System (NES) Career and Technical Education (CTE) staffer, said he gave his class full of seniors two paragraphs to read and asked them to complete another sentence he had practically filled out for them, but was left stunned when they couldn’t finish the task.
“I basically completed the sentence for them, he said. “These are 17- and 18-year-old kids, and they couldn’t fill in four words. Four words!” exclaimed Williams.
“I gave them the scenario, we annotated together. I gave them the answers before we even had the problem and they couldn’t do it. I don’t know I simply don’t know where the problem is,” he said frustratingly.
“This is only day two, and I have seniors who simply cannot read and seniors who cannot write. They cannot write,” Williams cried out.
“Our young black men, our young brown men, our young black girls, and our young brown girls,” Williams said as he began to sob before ending the video.

I know. I wonder if my 40 year old step daughters can read.
Pretty much all of these illiterate students are eligible to vote and do vote.
I taught this class for a week in 1979 as a substitute. They were graduating seniors who read at a 4th grade level.
I taught at an all black school in Jackson MS, now closed because of black flight.
My first year I focused only on rudimentary English writing in my junior/senior class - literally used a whole book of middle school grammar exercises and then made them do writing samples, working up to resume and formal letter writing.
The first year it went well, minus the fact I was a new teacher and had no idea what I was doing. The second year it went better. The third year a new admin came in and told me I should be teaching them at least half literature and the formal Mississippi state standards.
That was the last year I worked there.
Oh noes, a black teacher that told the truth about his class of black high school seniors that cannot read or write.
How did they get that far in school {never mind, that's a rhetorical question}.
As a group, public school teachers are the most pampered, far left crew in America, and I say that as a guy the has two excellent pubbie school teachers neighbors, but they are rare.
Hell they even fly the American flag and go to Church and discipline their kids.
Woah noah, what comes next, a Trump sign...nah, that won't happen and I don't blame them.
I carry in my front yard when my Trump stuff is up, the loons are all around.
That high school is over 2/3 black and 1% white not Hispanic. 97% “economically disadvantaged”. Schools in area are probably awful. What is wrong with teacher breaking into tears?

I had a black roommate back in college. One of his friends, also black, stayed with us for a couple of months when he first came to town and was getting settled in. One day, this guy asked me for some help filling out some form for school, where he was attending on an athletic scholarship. I said sure!, and we sat down to fill it out. I soon realized that he could neither read nor write. I had to read him the questions, and completely fill out the form for him. Heartbreaking and outrageous.
Some teachers are well aware of the fact those who don’t want to learn won’t.

But, you can’t make him think
It all starts at home....or is supposed to at least.
Over the course of my elementary and high school experience, my parents spent many hours with me making sure I would be prepared for class exercises and on tests.
I know this is captain obvious stuff but I suspect that is terribly rare in the black community these days.
In the same edition of the Chicago Tribune where I read about the White Sox deal (page after page after page) there was a 4 or 5 paragraph story about 2 girls who graduated Valedictorian and Salutatorian from their inner-city high school (Cooley, maybe) and then went to Malcolm X JC.
The college put them both into remedial English and Math programs because they were unable to function at junior college level. And that was the #1 and #2 GPA's in the graduating class. I wonder how many of the other graduates that year ended up in city jobs helping to make Chicago what it is today.
We’ve been at the point for some time now that not hurting a person’s feelings takes precident over identifying and correcting their educational shortcomings.
As a kid I got embarrassed st school occasionally.....you know what incident for me? Made me work harder so it didn’t happen again.
Getting knocked around was part of life back then, toughened you up and prepared you for life because getting knocked around is part of life.
I discovered that if I refreshed the page, I could still see a portion of the text behind the paywall. So I just kept scrolling. It was a little tedious, but I was able to read the whole article.

Anybody remember Washington Redskin* Dexter Manley testifying before a Congressional committee that he got through Oklahoma State and could not read or write. That was I think 30 years ago!
* I refuse to use their new team name!
Reading and Writing isn’t keeping it real.
