The push is back on for slavery reparations.
In July, the New York Civil Liberties Union issued a report urging the immediate adoption of reparations. As Lanessa Owens-Chaplin — one of the report’s authors and Director of the Racial Justice Center at NYCLU — puts it:
“Reparations are a debt that is owed. Enslaved Black people built the foundation of New York’s economy… Reparations must be extended to all Black New Yorkers descended from those enslaved by New York State.”
The NYCLU report is predicated on an undeniable reality: the persistent wealth gap between black and white households. But all this fails to grapple with the central problem of reparation payments: Not all white New Yorkers benefited from slavery, but all New Yorkers would have to shell out to support the payments.
I uncovered the complications of the issue when, as part of a local America 250 project, I researched the history of slavery in my own Westchester County suburb. The town of Rye was once an agricultural village on the shores of the Long Island Sound. Small family farms stood side-by-side larger estates on which the enslaved labored, raising beef cattle and produce bound for the Manhattan market.
Here’s the complication: Slave ownership among white people was far from universal. Of 130 slaves present in the town in 1790, 68 were owned by only six families — including the family of John Jay, the country’s first chief justice and a leading abolitionist. Moreover, households that did not own slaves at all (163) were far greater in number than those that did (42).
Most white townspeople, in fact, were poor. Seventy-seven households were listed as owning only “house and lot.” Their tiny properties were worth less than $500, or around $10,000 adjusted for inflation.

If any peoples who are deserving of any reparations, it’s the indigenous tribes of the US who were here when Europeans came here as settlers. The Trail of Tears comes to mind as one. Blacks should go after the Muslimes who captured and brought them here. And Demorats who enslaved them.

Martin Van Buren's father was a slaveowner. Martin Van Buren ran for President in 1848 as the candidate of the Free Soil Party.
The people of Van Buren County in Missouri were so offended by that that they changed the name of their county to Cass County, after the Democratic nominee for President in 1848.
One of the biggest claims is that the United States is at fault for slavery from 1619 to 1775, years for which the U.S. did not even exist.

My pastor had this test done and to his surprise found that he had 1% Nigerian ancestry. Hummmmm !!! So HOW MUCH African DNA will be enough to collect reparations? 1%, 5, 20, 50, .....

Funny how a people who never had a concept of ownership of any thing suddenly are owed my money. As long as we're throwing money around for hurt racial feelings, I'd like a big chunk of change for the discrimination my Irish ancestors faced in America. "Irish Need Not Apply'' read the signs back then.
Per the Heritage Foundation, the War on Poverty has cost American taxpayers 22 trillion dollars so far.

Generations of Americans have given and will continue to give at the office to pay for that.

There is some fascinating history about slavery during the pre revolutionary period.
One of the largest slave trading areas around the time of the Revolution was Newport RI.
Wealthy ship owners lived there and used the ships to (among other things) bring slaves to America as well as the Caribbean.
They were mostly British sympathizers during the early days of the revolution.
However the British viewed their trade as assisting the rebels and started shelling Newport from off shore.
Within a year almost all of their mansions were totally destroyed.
The mansions currently in Newport were mostly built in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Hardly.
Yeah, I saw those signs on historic pictures. As for “their land” well they were here before Europeans arrive which is not saying who did they displace when they arrived thousands of years before?
It’s just political before the midterms. Most know it’s not realistic. Dem’s are just saying, “Vote for us black peoples.”
