Exactly who Rome needed after the disaster of Nero and the Year of Four Emperors

He was the right guy for the job. Augustus and Claudius were the two most able heads during the Julio-Claudian era. Vespasian really got everything simmered down, and seems to have been scary smart. Having managed to *survive* in the imperial circle for such a long time is exhibit A for that claim. 😁

Everything I learned about Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian, I learned from reading the 20-book historical fiction series by Lindsey Davis that started with "The Silver Pigs" and featured Marcus Didius Falco as Vespasian's private investigator/informer.

I absolutely love Vespasian. When courtiers gave him a history of his family that traced his lineage back to Hercules, he burst out laughing. When is son (the future emperor) told him that his tax on urine was undignified, Vespasian held a coin under his son’s nose and famously said “money doesn’t stink.” He was probably the most down-to-earth emperor that Rome ever had.

Heh, and taxing the urine (which was basically a tax on the fullers) was one of those ideas that often only come from people who did actual work during their lives, and Vespasian fits that profile. 😁

If I weren’t on a book-buying timeout, I’d probably try a couple of ‘em:
