The blue Danube is showing its secrets.

We have been reporting on Europe’s summer from hell, where they are battling high temperatures, wildfires, and droughts.

One of the most dramatic cases if the mythical Danube river that is so low that the Nuclear Power Plants in Hungary and Romania had to be shut.

Now the situation has worsened even more to the point where remnants of the past are arising from the bottom of the river: dozens of WW2 ships and boats – and a mystery from a 1,000 years ago.

CBS News reported:

“Water levels on the Danube River, the second longest in Europe, have dropped so low because of drought that the hulks of dozens of World War II German battleships — and even the remains of an ancient woolly mammoth — are emerging into view.

They are a curious distraction from the summer heat crisis. The Danube’s record-low water levels have also forced power plants to the brink of shutting down, and governments across Central and Eastern Europe are taking steps to conserve electricity.

[…] The ships, some still laden with weapons, belonged to Nazi Germany’s Black Sea fleet that the Germans deliberately sank as they retreated from Romania and as Soviet forces advanced deeper into Europe near the end of the war.”

Reuters reported:

“The remains of what is believed to be an ancient mammoth have been revealed in northern Bulgaria, after Danube River water levels ‌receded to a record low level, the BTA news agency reported on Wednesday, citing historians.

The animal’s remains were found on Wednesday by a local resident of the Ryahovo village, who noticed the unusual find on the river bed. Villagers then alerted specialists in the Regional History Museum in the nearby town of Ruse.”

Museum Director Nikolay Nenov: “’I would not call it a sensation, but any discovery of such ancient remains is very important for science’, Nenov said, adding it has been long believed that the site was a swamp where the animal probably died thousands of years ago.”

> hulks of dozens of World War II German battleships <

It’s a side point, but I guess the author has no idea what a “battleship” is.

Either that, or the crafty Nazis were somehow able to build battleships that could navigate long rivers.

But they have been the most aggressive actors to try to slow climate change, and this is how Gaia rewards them?

The gods must be angry.

Yeah - I dug for a while and couldn’t find any justification for that number.

This doesn’t clear it up much, but it’s conflated numbers. The 1,000 year number is that the level of the Danube is at a 1,000 year low. That says nothing about the age of the exposed bones.

Here in Florida Panhandle are still way under our usual rain totals for this year. Back in June we were 8 inches behind................

We’ve been consistently in the high 60’s in the AM. Local tomatoes are coming strong now. Even German Johnsons.

If they are deliberately sunk ships, some opportunistic business person should be out there trying to salvage as much of that pre-nuke steel as possible, they aren’t war graves so it shouldn’t be an issue. great opportunity.

People bash Michigan all the time, some of it is well deserved. But remember, if times get really horrific we have the most fresh water in 50 light years. ;~)
