Prepackage meat products are often under the weight marked on the package. Not only is the weight short, they put a thick absorbent pad under the product. That wad of material can weigh over a half pound by itself.
Pre-internet, I remember a story of an old woman buying meat from the butcher telling him “if you put your thumb on that scale, I’m bringing it home to cook it too”. It might have been from a record from a comedian like Bob Newhart.
This is why stores don’t like ‘influencers’. They expose their chicanery.
Tare means to zero out the packing...........
And, if they are at the sell by date, they mark them down another 50%.

Thanks.
Go to a real butcher for meat.
Love to; unfortunately, their prices are waaay beyond my budget.
Yes, but if you put the diaper and the meat on the scale together, it should come up to weight, but it doesn’t.
In the meat department i worked at as a young guy…you put the package on, reset the scale and then weighed the meat. If you are using absorbing pads and the meat is sitting for a couple days, that pad is going to gain all that moisture weight coming out of the meat.
You are usually always better buying meat cut at the counter. It’s fresher and the weigh it right in front of you.
The stuff in the case has been sitting for about a day longer at minimum.
We had a supermarket go out of business over news reports showing the meat dept would alter the dates on the meat pkgs.....meaning you never knew how long the meat was sitting there when you bought it and cooked it for your meal. ....yuck......
I have seen this guy’s videos who was on top of this underweight situation at walmart. He does account for the packaging and pointed out that the shrimp is almost a quarter water. So once the shrimp thaws out and drains, you’re left with considerably less. There was a brand of ham that was prepackaged, sliced and it was underweight many times by almost half!! Sugar, kitty litter- so many products that we have been buying for decades, Lord only knows how much we have been ripped off over the decades. I did see that he was asked to leave a Walmart when he went in to do more weighing of their fresh meat boneless chicken breast.
You missed the point. He put BOTH the meat and the pad on the scale and it is still significantly under weight. You should watch any video to the end before posting about it.
Again, watch the video. Pretty hard to fake it. Also, watch his video on the Kentucky Ledged ham. They marked it as over 5lbs and its actual weight is under 2lbs.
I bought a chuck roast from Sam’s Club and it was supposed to weigh 3.9lbs. It barely made 3.5lbs, INCLUDING the packaging.
That maybe. But I’m talking about having the meat boil out water for several minutes. Not too many years ago that didn’t happen.
Don’t get me started on the giant holes in Harmons bakery sourdough bread.
I went to my freezer and checked the meat I had bought in bulk yesterday. I had portioned it out and marked the weight on each package. It was as advertised, thank goodness. But then, it wasn’t purchased at Wal-Mart. I did purchase some Tyson chicken wings at Wal-Mart; they were marked from the factory at 2½ lbs. On my digital scale, they weighed 2.71 lbs. They were in thick plastic packaging.
I think they have been getting enough press about this that they have tightened things up. I plan on checking Kroger later this week, especially on Kentucky Legend ham. They marked a package as 5.4lbs and the actual weight was 1.81lbs. Time to start checking things...
The 10# frozen ckn leg quarters come with a pint + of water, almost a pound.
