The idea of the commencement speaker always seemed silly to me. They wait till the last moments of your education to bring in someone to inspire you. I would think it would be better to bring in someone on the FIRST day of school to get your head straight and on the path to success. What would you tell a student on the first day of school?

Social skills are as important as educational skills. Being able to interact with other people is critically important to getting ahead in life. Join the team, the band, the scouts. Make lots of friends and socialize!
You want to have a strong, healthy body. Be active, play, exercise. Try to eat healthy most of the time. At the same time, accept your body and work to improve it. Think. “This is my body, this is what I got, how do I make the most of it?”. Everyone’s body is different. Don’t be too critical of others, or of yourself. And if you really need help don’t be afraid to ask.
Don’t worry too much about what other people think of you. They are all living their own lives and worrying about what other people are thinking of them. They are probably not thinking much about you at all. Live your life. Enjoy your life. Be yourself!
No matter how tough you think you are, you are not tougher than a steel blade or a lead bullet, either of which will plant your sorry behind six feet under ground. Don’t be the tough guy, be the smart guy, that’s where the money is! And if you really are a tough guy, be something you can be proud (and get paid) to be tough: soldier, athlete, construction worker etc.
People care little about who your ancestors were, where they came from or how bad they were mistreated. People care about who YOU are and what YOU have to offer. Pay attention in school, so you will have MUCH to offer. And the best way to fight prejudice and racism is to not be the negative stereotype yourself.
There is a lot of political fussing going on. Always try to look at all sides before deciding who to support. Listen to people you disagree with, it will help you understand their thinking or possibly see things in a different light. In war and politics everything you hear from both sides is propaganda – “WE are the Good People, THEY are the Bad People!”. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. What you see on TV is a presentation: they are showing you what they want you to see and not showing you what they don’t want you to see. Very often there is much more to the story than what you have heard.
Don’t worry too much about the problems of the world. If the grown ups can’t seem to fix things what are you supposed to do about it? Pay attention in school so that when you grow up you might be able to fix problems rather than being one of them. Concentrate on getting your own life in order before you try to save the world. You can’t help others if you can’t even take care of yourself; plus it will give you time to learn how the world really works.
I’d tell him to love the truth.
If you love the truth, it’s a lot easier to detect the lies.
You should tell them to listen to their teachers but if their teachers tell them to do something that is against what they learned at home that they should say no and if the teacher insists they should call you. It is the gift of no and every kid should have it in their pocket.
You should have, by this time, have already taught them that if someone tells them "not to tell your parents" that means you should tell your parents immediately.
That is enough for a five year old.
After that, we made conversation about "us"...things that mom and daughter can do..."Do you want to go down to the beach??"...library....the mall...play with Sonya??
We really never discussed the world at large. These are kids...let them be kids.
I loved my first day of school! Absoultely loved it!
Until I found out I had to go back every weekday for 12 years!.............

Age group for this school really matters here.
Is this a grade school middle school or high school?
Those are very different groups.

It’s called “convocation.”
Most students would skip it if it wasn’t mandatory.
Any age. The key is positive attitude and encouragement. I told my son when he was 5 that I wanted him to be a success and make lots of money. Pay attention in school and put in the effort. He now has a great job in Washington, DC making almost six figures. My parents sent me to school and just said “work hard” and not much else. I’ve spent most of my life working crap jobs and struggling to get by.
I got into a fight my first day of school.
With a girl.
I was told emphatically at that point, “you don’t hit girls.”
Didn’t make any sense to me. My older sister would hit me, scratch me (she had FINGERNAILS!) in typical sibling scuffles. The fact that she was a girl seemed irrelevant to me. At the time..
That's what I'd say...
I would tell him that, if he had to go to the bathroom, he should raise his hand and ask the teacher, “Where’s the sand, cat?”
Schools and teachers are not responsible for you getting an education....YOU ARE!
Interesting. I hear a lot of homeschoolers only spend two hours a day teaching but the kids do way better than government schooled kids.
