A Westlake man has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for throwing rocks and ignited debris at California Highway Patrol officers trapped underneath a freeway overpass during a violent anti-immigration law enforcement protest last year, the Justice Department announced Tuesday.
Ismael Vega, 42, was also ordered to pay $253,415 in restitution.
Vega pleaded guilty on April 29 to one count of obstructing, impeding and interfering with law enforcement during civil disorder and was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison.
During the evening of June 8, 2025, Vega was part of a large group of protesters on the Main Street overpass above the 101 Freeway in Downtown Los Angeles, according to his plea agreement.
“This civil disorder stood apart in its magnitude,” prosecutors argued in a sentencing memorandum. “A sergeant in the California Highway Patrol with nearly three decades in law enforcement wrote a statement about how this incident stood apart and the impact it had on him and his son. His experience underscores how violent this incident became and the deep toll it took on all law enforcement present.”
Vega is the fifth defendant who has been sentenced in connection with this case.
Flores is facing a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison at his Aug. 3 sentencing hearing.
The lead defendant, 40-year-old Adam Charles Palermo of Rampart Village, is facing up to 20 years in federal prison at his Dec. 14 sentencing hearing.

Rocks are part of my improvised weapons inside my home and when I’m outside in the yard, they are real weapons.
Good to see substantive sentences handed out, now, enforce them, no early outs, no plea agreements, no nothing. Hard time is a deterrent, the rest is babysitting.
Neanderthal
Molotov cocktails....
The prime choice of Jesse Jackson, as photo printed on the front of Life magazine, as he leads a group of dissidents.
“Man sentenced for throwing rocks, burning debris at CHP officers during L.A. protest”. Assault rocks now in LA.
It looks like it’s time to ship Ismael’s ass home on a jackass.
The sentence should have bewen 20-to-life.
Call me Ishmael Vega?
“Ismael Vega, 42, was also ordered to pay $253,415 in restitution.” What he did was evil. Throwing large stones at parked police cars is cowardly and damaging.
It’s a federal sentence. He will do the whole time.
These guys listened to their public defenders...They decided to plead guilty...
US Attorney agreed to recommend fewer years in jail in return...
US Attorney did the right thing...There is no guarantee that a Los Angeles County jury would find any of those thugs guilty...Why take such a chance?
Not really...
If he "behaves" in prison, he will be released from the federal prison after doing 85% of his time...
"Federal inmates serving sentences longer than one year earn 54 days of good conduct time per year served. This means most people serve approximately 85% of their sentence before release."
