Oil producers in the Persian Gulf are making plans to bypass the Strait of Hormuz with new pipelines and a new port after Iran has repeatedly attacked ships and blocked traffic.
The idea is to minimize Tehran’s leverage on the waterway that once saw 20% of the world’s oil pass through it as the war stretches into its fifth month.
Iran has already insisted that it will impose tolls on the strait, which could cost tens of billions of dollars. And in some cases, it is extracting millions of dollars of protection money per oil tanker.
Two such projects are already underway in the United Arab Emirates and Iraq — with Saudi Arabia eyeing its own and Dubai also seeking to establish a new port to further reduce dependence on the strait.
There should be enough pipeline capacity to divert up to 45% of the pre-war Persian Gulf oil export by the end of 2027, Goldman Sachs analyst Alexandra Paulus told investors on Monday.
Given that pipeline projects can move quickly in the Middle East, the bank estimates that output bypassing the strait could reach 7.3 million barrels by the end of 2028 — making 60% of the Gulf’s oil strait-proof.
The UAE’s much-touted West-East Pipeline project is about 50% complete, with Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed ordering its completion by 2027.
Once completed, the 252-mile pipeline would run parallel to the Fujairah pipeline and double the country’s overland capacity to 3.6 million barrels a day.
Sultan Al Jaber, the head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, said the war in Iran proved Dubai was moving in the right direction with the project to free more of the world’s oil supply.

But what about the environment? Surely a leftist will sue to shut these projects down. /sarcasm.
Ha haaaaaas! Way to overplay your hand azzholes! ‘Course pipelines are as bombable as ships. But I’m sure defenses against Iranian missiles and drones are getting better too.
The pipelines sound good . . . but won’t they be vulnerable to attack and disruption by Iranian drones?
I'm thinking that drone defense will soon be extremely effective. If I'm not mistaken, Israel is already starting to use lasers against incoming missiles - I bet lasers would provide an excellent defense against drones.
I've been advocating pipelines to bypass the Strait for months.
The Arab countries need to stop depending on United States to protect them and build up their militaries. They are all getting free ride from US. Same as NATO countries in EU.
Or build a canal similar to Panama canal.
The 1,200-kilometer East-West Crude Oil Pipeline through Saudi Arabia (exiting in the Red Sea), is buried under ground
>> but won’t [pipelines] be vulnerable to attack and disruption by Iranian drones?
I suppose so... but take away their oil blackmail, and there will be no reason to hold back from turning their cities, their power plants, and/or their entire coastline into hell on earth.
Excellent
People miss the point about what Trump is trying to accomplish in the Middle East and Iran-he is trying to reset the board.
And this is part of it.
Iran has been holding the world hostage for nearly half a century with their threats to choke off the Strait of Hormuz.
The Gulf States were terrified of them, when they weren’t just moderately aligned with them, hoping to be the last one eaten.
Look at what has happened now. Iran has openly attacked Gulf States, and they have had enough, and are hitting back on their own without our help. And they have embarked on a crash course of building pipelines to bypass the Strait.
They should have done it decades ago, but they are doing this now.
Trump and his team are succeeding.
Energy-intensive sectors—like heavy chemicals, steel, and automotive manufacturing—would face permanent structural damage. Many operations would either shut down or permanently relocate to regions with cheaper domestic energy, like North America.
” and build up their militaries”
It is already in place with our support. The Gulf Coalition has very good military force.
It came together when Kurds were extinguishing ISIS in Syria. Trust has come about from there.
The question? Will what we know as Iran (Persia?). Persian’s I have known, hate being called Iranians.
Closer to Armageddon.
That battle will not be won by men without higher help.
Which is the whole point of what Trump is doing.
Necessity is the Mother of Invention.
One of the reasons why Britain considered backing the South in the Civil War was the potential loss of cotton for its mills. The Confederacy thought this gave them a lot of leverage. It didn’t. Britain found other places to get it - Egypt and India, in particular.
In two years the strait won’t matter anymore.
We pretty much destroyed Syria to secure a pipeline from Qatar and Saudi Arabia to Turkey, primarily to provide Europe an alternative to Russian gas. Now that Assad is gone and Russia sidelined, that option is likely back on the table, along with the rest of the projects mentioned. Maybe this time it won't create millions of refugees and hundreds of thousands dead.
“Or build a canal similar to Panama canal.”
Makes more sense than the stupid projects the Gulf States were wasting their money on like linear cities in the desert and artificial islands.
The ones they’re building now (above ground for speed) would be. They could always bury the pipes (or build buried pipelines) which would make them invulnerable to drones. They would just need more time to get those built.
They’re dependent on shipping their own oil. That’s what our blockade will be stopping. Starve your biggest clients?? Not a great idea.
