CNBC’s ranking of the 10 worst states to live in 2026—all of them Republican-led—has drawn criticism from conservatives.
The broadcaster gave each state a Quality of Life score based on factors including crime rates, air quality, healthcare access, worker protections and civil rights laws. The Quality of Life category was one of 10 in the outlet’s annual America’s Top States for Business study.
Tennessee was ranked the worst state to live in after receiving a score of just 64 out of 290.
CNBC noted that Tennessee had one of the highest violent-crime rates in the nation, citing FBI statistics, as well as the third-highest drug-death rate.
The broadcaster also cited state laws restricting transgender people’s bathroom access, limits on local anti-discrimination ordinances and Governor Bill Lee’s designation of June 2026 as “Nuclear Family Month.” June is widely recognized as Pride Month across the United States.
CNBC’s bottom 10 states for quality of life, from lowest-scoring upward, were:
Tennessee (64 out of 290) Texas (78) Indiana (82) Louisiana (89) Georgia (89) Utah (95) Missouri (98) Alabama (99) Oklahoma (103) Arkansas (103)

Good post. Clarity was needed.
Tennessee (64 out of 290): +42.4K
Texas (78): +67.3K
Indiana (82): +12.2K
Louisiana (89): -14.4K
Georgia (89): +27.3K
Utah (95): +3.3K
Missouri (98): +14.0K
Alabama (99): +23.4K
Oklahoma (103): +14.5K
Arkansas (103):+14.5K
For some additional amusement, let's look at CNBC's list of "best states to live", written by the same clown. And while some of these states did gain population, the gains were paltry in comparison to states on their "worst" list, and several states lost massive numbers of people:
Massachusetts (184): -33.3K
North Dakota (186): +512
Virginia (189): +6.3K
New Hampshire (189): +6.6K
Hawaii (191): -8.9K
Connecticut (205): -5.9K
Minnesota (210): +8.3K
New Jersey (223): -37.4K
(As a recent escapee from the once wonderful Garden State, I find this one particularly absurd)
Maine (232): +7.4K
Vermont (233): -726
Who gives a rat’s ass what CNBC says about quality of life?
Just take out Memphis and it drops to almost zero.
Yes, you don’t want to move to Tennessee. Take my word for it. Pick out a paradise state instead, New York, California, New Jersey, Illinois, etc. People in Tennessee have too much freedom, no state income tax, lots of guns, a very conservative legislature, and (outside of Memphis and Nashville) you can leave your home unlocked with no issues. Don’t chance it; stay far, far away.

Well, it’s a motel.
Fine by me. I live in one of these lousy states. Don’t want any company.
Yes. It’s awful here. Stay away.
Break it down by county and demographics.
That must be why people have been flocking to TN is droves for the past several years.

Control the unit of measure and you control the outcome. Remove the black population and the democrat run cities and your rate flips to one of the best.
At least as long as there has been a public web MSM has been doing this.
They set “wacko leftist wishlist” as “good” and rank accordingly. Just invert the chart and get reality.
Yes, please keep convincing leftists to stay in the hell-holes they created. Don’t move to Republican-led states. You won’t be happy there.
... Tennessee had one of the highest violent-crime rates in the nation ...How about Tennessee other than Memphis?
Similar questions about other "red" states?
Probably and I must be doing something wrong
I am leaving Minnesota for Missouri
Well, if being in Bama, with their mindset makes me bad. Then I am just damned bad. Tough crap (insert the S word)!.
