CNBC’s ranking of the 10 worst states to live in 2026—all of them Republican-led—has drawn criticism from conservatives.
The broadcaster gave each state a Quality of Life score based on factors including crime rates, air quality, healthcare access, worker protections and civil rights laws. The Quality of Life category was one of 10 in the outlet’s annual America’s Top States for Business study.
Tennessee was ranked the worst state to live in after receiving a score of just 64 out of 290.
CNBC noted that Tennessee had one of the highest violent-crime rates in the nation, citing FBI statistics, as well as the third-highest drug-death rate.
The broadcaster also cited state laws restricting transgender people’s bathroom access, limits on local anti-discrimination ordinances and Governor Bill Lee’s designation of June 2026 as “Nuclear Family Month.” June is widely recognized as Pride Month across the United States.
CNBC’s bottom 10 states for quality of life, from lowest-scoring upward, were:
Tennessee (64 out of 290) Texas (78) Indiana (82) Louisiana (89) Georgia (89) Utah (95) Missouri (98) Alabama (99) Oklahoma (103) Arkansas (103)

That’s fine with me. Liberal scum don’t need to move to my (ahem) low scoring state 🙄
I wonder what Tennessee’s crime rating would be if Nashville and Memphis were not included.
“Tennessee had one of the highest violent-crime rates in the nation”
LOL...like states as a whole and the USA as a whole, take out one crime-ridden city and you find the rest of the place is nice and safe.
They should walk the street of LA at night and see if they feel the same way
I hope they rate Oklahoma even worse than this next time!
“Tennessee was ranked the worst state to live in after receiving a score of just 64 out of 290”
Hmmmm. Terrible place to live?
That must be why people have been flocking to TN is droves for the past several years.
What people say about me ain’t none of my business.
Looks good to me, stay away.
;^)
They can stay away from mine, too. I love living here. I’ve never felt safer in any of the other 4 states I’ve lived in than I do here.
Quality of life is very high here. I have no idea what these bozos are talking about, but they can kiss my grits. Please stay away!
I’m shocked they didn’t find a way to put Idaho on their list. But our crime rate is pretty low because of demographics. And the fact that everybody is armed.
Progressives don’t understand things like granularity in statistics. Take any gun stat they quote…
Strange; each of these states has net migration INTO the state, whereas the nonlisted NY, MA and CA have have had net outmigration for several years. Either misery loves company or this is yet another example of a lying, biased out of control “media” with a very open, hateful agenda.
Its amazing… looks like most of those states have a big blue city weighing these sucky down.
Exclude Memphis, and Tennessee is not nearly as bad.
The crime would be lower. But so would revenue. that’s the problem, you take one positive and you get a negative, but I don’t think Tennessee could survive without Nashville, and Memphis to a certain degree with tourism.
1. Pick ranking order you want
2. Gather lots or statistics from the important to the silly
3. Calculate weights for statistics from step 2 needed to give you your desired results from step 1
4. Feel smug that your original biases are now mathematically proven to be correct
They understand it fine when granularity helps them.
Hot days are climate, cold days are weather. Obvious example.
