In 1958, the world was introduced to an intergalactic horror movie about an alien gelatinous goo that consumes everything in its wake: The Blob. The '50s B-movie has gone down in history as a classic monster flick, that would later even spawn a gory remake in 1988. But, this terrifying UFO film isn't entirely fiction, and you may want to keep an eye on the sky after hearing the shocking true story that inspired The Blob.

Back in the days when young kids could hop a bus for a dime and go to town to a theater to watch all day monster movies for a quarter, I saw The Blob and it scared me to death. I couldn’t sit on the toilet for a month without constantly hopping up and looking for the monster coming up.

The theme song to The Blob is a pretty catchy lighthearted tune.
Very enjoyable, but completely disjointed from the movie.

I watched most of it from the space between the seats in front of me.

I did see it in the theatre too. Pretty young but I could follow the general idea, couldn’t follow the dialog.

Sounds like my experience going to Saturday movies at the Fox Venice theater with my older sister.

All those classic old sci-fi and horror films.

War of the Worlds had me scared to look at the windows i the dark.

One of the first commercials I saw on TV was for “The Blob” movie. At my age and with what little I knew about “movies” then, it scared the hell out of me.

The theme was written by Burt Bacharach, an early peak into his later musical genius--but then he was a student of Darius Milhaud after all.

" Two police officers named Joe Keenan and John Collins reportedly claimed to have seen something falling from the sky the night prior on the 26th. Searching the area where they believed the mysterious object fell, they found a strange purplish ooze dangling from a telephone pole."

It was Steve McQueen’s first breakout movie.

When my older sister (she would have been about 11) came home from seeing The Blob, I asked her if she liked it. She said “It was pretty good but they had some 30 year old guy playing a high school kid.”

Saw it at a drive-in in winter when I about 7. My feet were frozen, which made me feel safe from the blob that night in bed.

Dick Powell, who was the head of Four Star Productions, asked to see a rough cut of this film. This led to the casting of Steve McQueen in Wanted: Dead or Alive (1958).

Don’t forget…
The Blob is still alive. They couldn’t kill it - it would splatter and regenerate. So they carried it alive to the N/S Pole. I saw it when I was 12.

“The Blob is still alive”

The town in Pennsylvania where the movie was filmed, has a festival every year since:
