The era of total victory died when the communists made inroads into the Democrat party, so Trump must think outside the box.
As regular readers know, I’ve been completely off from work for almost three weeks so that I could travel to the Far East to help with my new (and first) grandchild. Helping with a newborn tends to put everything in perspective because that fragile little being’s survival is the single most important thing on the agenda. Paying attention to the news took second place to offering whatever practical help I could.
Those of us who saw Iran as an existential threat wanted a total victory (Hitler’s bunker suicide or Hirohito’s complete surrender). Then, we imagined, the free people of Iran would dance in the streets, the Strait would become an uncontested thoroughfare, and all would be joyous across the world.
However, we don’t live in 1945. During WWII, most Americans supported the war and were willing to fight for total victory. It wasn’t until the Korean War that America embraced the idea of fighting not to victory but to unsatisfactory stalemates. This was, in part, because communists began to make inroads into the Democrat party. By the Vietnam era, large segments of young America—people who became the next generation of politicians, teachers, journalists, and entertainers—had concluded that America and its values were not worth defending.
Their views were reflected in a Democrat political class that refused to fund or otherwise support our wars. Democrats, whether in Congress or the White House, snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. On the battlefield, our military won wars; in Washington, our politicians lost them.
Moreover, thanks to our experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan, we learned that occupying Muslim countries after incomplete, sort-of victories is a dead

I agree. We have too many communists in congress to fight a real war any more. The communists want us to lose and they do all they can to hinder any sort of victory.
Trump should be given credit at every available opportunity: he averted an almost 100% chance of nuclear war.
If the Ayatollahs had finished making nuclear weapons, they surely would have used them. In my view, anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool.
As a very minimum, Tel Aviv and Tehran would’ve been nuked. Would that have spread?
completely disagree
the reason no one has really “won” a war since in WW2 is that the rules of war would specifically created to prevent someone from winning.
In my opinion the rules of war exist only to make wars unwinable and unprofitable and thus freeze in place the current status quo.
Oh, and Trump did this with very little loss of American lives.
As much as I would like to see the IRGC get bombed into the stone age, the current approach by President Trump is by far the better approach for the next 4-6 months.
Iran requires regime change for a long term solution. The IRGC only carers about it's survival and is holding the Iranian people and their lives hostage. They have killed tens of thousands of men , women and children this year alone and they would like nothing more than a humanitarian disaster in Iran to serve their propaganda purposes.
President Trump's MOU is an attempt to build the foundation for regime change and it needs to be given time to work.
The era of total victory died when the communists made inroads into the Democrat(ic) party …So such a claim implies that neither WWI nor WWII resulted in total victories. Could be the case, since a lot of our traditional enemies who today call themselves our “allies” think they can speak up against us once more.
Anyone familiar with the theory that Prometheus lady presents on you tube? City of London and Britain control of Iran, and how Trump is breaking the old guards control of wars???
There can be no reasonable doubt that:
1. Iran can build missiles that can deliver warheads to Tel Aviv
2. there is no need for Iran to enrich uranium beyond 4% U-235 for Iranian civilian nuclear purposes
3. enrichment of U-235 is the most difficult part of building a nuclear weapon
4. Iran has the ability to build nuclear weapons
5. Israel has long paid proxies to attack Israel
6. “Death to Israel” is a common Iranian sentiment
7. The Iranian leadership would like to destroy the Israeli state and remove Israeli’s Jewish population
8. Iran’s combined possession of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles would be a grave danger to Israelis
9. Israel is right to refuse to compromise its very existence, its safety and its ability to control terrorism and safeguard its citizens to:
a. lower the price of American gasoline by $1 a gallon,
b. help Republicans in Congress to get reelected,
c. prop up a grossly overvalued American stock market, or
d. increase the sales of the Trump Organization.
No....we didn't lose with this agreement. It has absolutely nothing to do with what we have gained...more time...before we are hit.
Iran will never back off. Iran's policy remains..."Death To America".
I think I agree with what you are saying. WWII established a lot of “rules” and established a post-WWII world order which did provide stability and 80+ years of peace (no really big wars, anyway).
That’s not all bad.
But my personal opinion is that time moves on, the world changes, and the rules and the world order may not be worth keeping forever. I think there is something to be said for truly winning some wars, and if that idea comes back, the casualties would be in the millions. We currently have the idea that such a war is “unthinkable”. I think the time approaches when we will have to think about it.
I agree that unless I manage put $300 billion in your hands that I will not block your building as many H-bombs and ballistic missiles with the ability to carry H-bombs to US (and Israeli) cities as you please.

Trump hasn’t got Iran to give up even a gram of enriched uranium or one centrifuge.
Trump’s deal is far inferior to Obama’s deal.
“Democrats, whether in Congress or the White House, snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.”
The writer forgets that President Trump signed off on a withdrawal from Afghanistan in an agreement with the Taliban on February 29, 2020 at Doha, Qatar.
As to Iraq, what was victory supposed to look like?
General Shinseki was pushed out as Army Chief of Staff when he (correctly) predicted that an effective occupation of Iraq would require hundreds of thousands of troops, a prediction that conflicted with Rumsfeld’s in which we’d be greeted as liberators.
You want to try that one again?
5. Israel has long paid proxies to attack Israel
“You want to try that one again?”
Yours was an excellent suggestion.

Hezbollah also receives financial and political assistance, as well as weapons and training, from Iran.
Hezbollah has also received Iranian-supplied weaponry, including 11,500 missiles already in place in southern Lebanon. 3,000 Hezbollah militants have undergone training in Iran, which included guerrilla warfare, firing missiles and rocket artillery, operating unmanned drones, naval warfare, and conventional war operations.
Mahmoud Ali Suleiman, the Hezbollah operative captured in August 2006 by the IDF for his role in the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid on July 12, admitted during his interrogation that he received weapons-training and religious instruction in Iran.
On August 4, 2006, Jane’s Defence Weekly, a defense industry magazine, reported that Hezbollah asked Iran for “a constant supply of weapons to support its operations against Israel” in the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict. The report cited Western diplomatic sources as saying that Iranian authorities promised Hezbollah a steady supply of weapons “for the next stage of the confrontation”.
The Israel Defense Forces regard Hezbollah as virtually an arm of the Iranian armed forces; a senior Israeli defence official told Jane’s Defence Weekly that “we should consider that what we are facing in Lebanon is not a militia but rather a special forces brigade of the Iranian Army.” In an interview in 2007, Hezbollah Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qassem told the Iranian Arabic-language TV station al-Qawthar that all suicide bombings and other operations in Lebanon must be approved by the ayatollahs in Tehran
In a 2016 speech, Nasrallah publicly announced for the first time that all of his organization’s funding comes directly from Iran, “The budget of Hizbullah, its salaries, its expenses, its food, its drink, its weapons, and its missiles come from the Islamic Republic of Iran.” Nasrallah added that the funding is directly transferred to the group, not through banks and other financial institutions, “As long as Iran has money, we have money… Just as we receive the rockets that we use to threaten Israel, we are receiving our money.”
According to Asharq Al-Awsat, as of 2024, Iran has begun to ship weapons by sea in lieu of attacks by the Israeli air force on weapons deliveries coming into northern Syria via Iraq. Weapons and other goods are now shipped to the Syrian port of Latakia, and from there are sent to southern Lebanon.

That makes sense to you?
Donald J. Trump achieves what NOBODY has achieved for over 5000 years and that’s PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST and the liberal media says it’s “not that bad”?
I read that the Brits wanted the Jews planted in the middle of people who hate them because ultimately it ensues permanent conflict which raises insurance premiums for Lloyd of London which insures the oil tankers.
Normally fairly neutral people from Turkey who I know really hate the British for the trouble they’ve caused in the ME. They also say Bibi is a really corrupt guy and what is keeping his legal troubles at bay is the war. When the war is over Bibi faces the music.
” communists began to make inroads into the Democrat party”
NO, the “Democrats” were already Communists.
FDR was Stalin’s buttboy. His 1932 platform was a copy of the 1928 Socialist party platform. The New Deal was socialism lite. And fighting WWII was really just the Great Socialist Crusade to stop the fake socialists - the NSDAP - from obliterating the Bolshevik state to the East which was trying to overthrow all of Europe.
The Communists have suffered a few big collapses because of economic reality and Republican steadfast opposition since 1945, but they are still here and now control the Rat party to an extent not seen since the ‘20s.
“communists began to make inroads into the Democrat party ... Democrats, whether in Congress or the White House, snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.”
This cannot be overstated if you want to understand American history in the 20th and 21st century.
Back when Hitler and Stalin were allies, American communists supported Hitler. Had their partnership continued, American communists and fellow travelers would have opposed WWII. It might have been another Korea, perhaps another Vietnam.
